The Belgian parliament held a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday, nearly a month after the conclusion of a terrorism trial involving Assadollah Assadi, a high-ranking Iranian diplomat. The hearings raised serious doubts about whether and how Brussels intends to pursue accountability from the Iranian regime.

At the beginning of the month, a court in Belgium announced its verdict in the case of Assadollah Assadi – the Iranian regime’s terrorist diplomat that masterminded a plot against the regime’s political opposition, The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran).

Steven Erlanger, a writer for the New York Times reports on the verdict of a Belgian court handed down on Thursday the 4th of February 2021, that has convicted Assadollah Assadi, Iran’s Vienna-based diplomat on a charge of organizing a bomb attack in Paris in June 2018.

The Free Iran rally, where over 100,000 supporters of MEK gathered on June 30, 2018, to pledge support for the democratic alternative to the Iranian regime (the National Council of Resistance of Iran-NCRI). The Iranian regime had planned to bomb the gathering, but several of the Iranian regime operatives were arrested including one of its diplomats, Assadollah Assadi, and sentenced to long terms imprisonment.

The Iranian regime is likely to suffer a setback when one of its best agents is finally sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence in Belgium. Assadollah Assadi is the only Iranian diplomat to suffer such an ignominious end.
