On Thursday, February 23, at the initiative of Lord David Alton of Liverpool and in the presence of the country’s Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, a brief debate on British-Iranian relations was held in the United Kingdom’s House of Lords.

Several key issues were raised during this debate, including Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) designation as a terrorist entity, the regime’s human rights violations, and the need to support Iran’s democratic alternative to the ruling theocracy.

Lord Alton emphasized Tehran’s destabilizing activities, including its pursuit of a nuclear weapons program and the IRGC’s role in the Ukraine war, in his remarks. Referring to the regime’s constant breaching of its commitments under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal-formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)– Lord Alton said: “In any event, why should we believe anything this regime says or promises? It informed the world that its centrifuges could only enrich uranium to 60% purity. Its total enrichment of uranium stockpiles now exceeds JCPOA limits by at least 18 times, demonstrating unequivocally that this is not a regime whose word is the law.”

Lord Alton also mentioned Tehran’s human rights record, specifically the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988 and the ongoing executions in Iran. He also emphasized that the majority of the victims of the 1988 massacre were members and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), Iran’s main opposition group and a member of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a coalition of democratic forces led by President-elect Maryam Rajavi.

Lord Dholakia was one of the speakers at Thursday’s debate, and he supported his colleague’s demand to outlaw the IRGC and support the Iranian Resistance. “The United States Government considers the Islamic Republic of Iran to be the leading state sponsor of terrorism, alleging that Iran provides a variety of support to terrorist groups around the world, including finance, training, and equipment. How else can we explain the use of Iranian drones in Ukraine or the security of some Middle Eastern countries?” he asked.

“Democratic rule is perfectly possible in Iran,” he said of Mrs. Rajavi’s ten-point plan for the country’s future. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi is the leader of the pro-democracy Iranian opposition coalition, which has developed a 10-point plan and has widespread support in both Houses of the UK Parliament, as well as in parliaments around the world. She emphasizes the importance of the rule of law and fair elections. She briefly mentions the establishment of a democratic, secular, and non-nuclear republic.”
