The Iranian revolution sent shockwaves around the world. Despite ups and downs and the regime’s brutal crackdown, its persistence made regime change a viable option.

Who will succeed in the ruling theocracy? How can a regime change occur? Furthermore, is the opposition in need of transparency or unity? Iranians have demonstrated their desire for a secular republic by chanting, “Neither monarchy nor mullahs, we want democracy and equality” and “Death to the oppressor, whether Shah or mullahs.”

However, the return of Iran’s deposed monarchy has created uncertainty in recent months. The decaying monarchy is being marketed by Shah’s son, Reza Pahlavi, and remnants of the regime that was deposed by millions of Iranians in 1979.

Reza Pahlavi has recently been accompanied by a number of celebrities and figures, including Masih Alinejad, a former state reporter in Iran affiliated with the so-called reformist faction. This self-proclaimed opposition, led by Pahlavi, claims to promote freedom and pluralism. Despite their deafening “unity” cries, Pahlavi and Alinejad continue to demonize Iran’s main opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), and its parent coalition of democratic forces, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Reza Pahlavi stated on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference that he “prefers republic” but that “elected monarchy should also be weighed.” The second is an oxymoron. Iranians voted against the king’s absolute rule in 1979 and continue to oppose any return to that era. Reza Pahlavi’s ridiculous comparison of Iran to constitutional monarchies in Europe is yet another blatant yet inept action and deliberate neglect of Iran and the Middle East’s geopolitical and historical issues.

Another critical issue that Shah’s heirs and entourage refuse to address is the rights of Iran’s ethnic minorities and nationalities, who have endured centuries of oppression. Reza Pahlavi and his supporters accuse and attack Iranian Kurds in broad daylight. No member of the so-called “opposition coalition” has condemned the recent attack by Pahlavi’s thugs on MEK supporters and Kurdish Iranians at a rally in Brussels.

What else can one expect from those who displayed posters of Parviz Sabeti, a notorious torturer of Shah’s secret police, SAVAK, at their rally in Munich?

For Iranians who remember Ruhollah Khomeini and how he hijacked the 1979 revolution, Reza Pahlavi and the company’s approach of deferring everything to the future is a major source of concern. Khomeini did not begin attacking and ranting about dissidents while abroad but rather began his killing spree once he returned to Tehran.

Unlike the coalition of reformists and dictatorial heirs, the NCRI and its president-elect, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, have laid out their vision for Iran’s future. The Iranian people, as well as their organized Resistance movement, desire and work to achieve their long-held goal of freedom and democracy.
