Iran: UN Special Rapporteur Legitimizes the Regime’s Crimes and Plundering Policies
As Iranian cities struggle with high prices, poverty, and inflation, the ruling religious fascism is using Alena Douhan, a Belarussian State University professor and the UN’s special rapporteur on sanctions, to cover up their systemic corruption and ongoing crimes against Iranians. Ms. Douhan, who has ties to human rights violators, was welcomed by the clerical regime at a time when the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran has been denied entry to Iran for the past 26 years. She blamed sanctions for the Iranian people’s economic woes and urged their lifting in her despicable remarks, which whitewashed the mullahs’ theft and plunder.
“Iran’s actions had reduced the direct negative effects of sanctions on human rights,” she claimed on May 18 to the Quds Force-affiliated news agency Tasnim. Her words bring to mind the betrayal of human rights that occurred after the massacre of political prisoners in 1988 when the regime took advantage of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights’ visit to Iran.
Fars, the IRGC-affiliated news agency, Tasnim, Mizan, the criminal judiciary’s news agency, Mehr news agency, affiliated with the Intelligence Ministry, and state Radio and Television, as well as Khamenei’s mouthpiece, Kayhan daily, have all welcomed Ms. Douhan’s visit and remarks. On the same days that the regime’s repressive forces were slaughtering anti-regime protesters and wounding or arresting many more, Douhan met with regime officials.
Ms. Douhan expressed sympathy for the patients and expressed concern about the high cost and scarcity of medicine, despite the fact that the monopoly on medicine production and importation is held by the plundering foundation “Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order,” which has stolen $100 billion from the Iranian people. It is unclear why Dougan did not express sympathy for the 550,000 Coronavirus victims, the majority of whom died as a result of Khamenei’s ban on vaccine imports.
The Iranian people are starving and without medicine, while the IRGC’s budget has increased by 240 percent in the last fiscal year alone. Furthermore, Khamenei has allocated more than 5.5 billion euros from the National Sovereign Fund to security forces, with the IRGC receiving the majority of the funds.
The regime increased the budget of the state-run Radio and Television, which is part of the propaganda and repression machine, by 56 percent in the same year. The regime’s deliberate policy of depriving people of medical services is a major crime that falls within the scope of this Rapporteur’s responsibilities, about which she has remained silent.
The lifting of sanctions between 2015 and 2018 demonstrated that it had no impact on people’s livelihoods and instead fuelled the regime’s terror and crime machine both inside and outside the country. As a result, Iranians have chanted during uprisings, “Our enemy is right here.” They lie, it’s America.”
The Iranian Resistance calls on the UN to prevent the Iranian dictatorship from using UN agencies, rapporteurs, and mechanisms to justify its crimes against the Iranian people. Khamenei and Raisi must be held accountable by the UN for the massacre of protesters during the 2019 uprising and the deliberate downing of a Ukrainian airliner in January 2020.
