In a strong rebuke of the Iranian regime’s recent actions, the Committee of Romanian Parliamentarians for a Free Iran has condemned the death sentences of political prisoners Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. These men, sentenced for “waging war against God” and “corruption on Earth,” are supporters of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The Committee’s public statement, addressed to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, calls for urgent international intervention to prevent the executions.“The death sentences are nothing but an attempt to suppress political opponents through violence and fear,” the Romanian committee stated. They further emphasized the broader context, noting that these sentences come as part of a larger campaign to quash dissent in Iran, particularly following the anniversary of the 2022 nationwide protests.
Both Ehsani and Hassani have endured physical and psychological torture since their arrests in 2022. Human rights advocates have long decried Iran’s use of such methods, arguing that these actions flagrantly violate international law. The Romanian parliamentarians are now calling for a coordinated response from the global community to hold Iran accountable.
The Committee’s statement urges the United Nations to take immediate actions, such as public condemnation and activating its human rights mechanisms. The statement highlights Iran’s repeated violations of international agreements, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention Against Torture. “Iran’s continued use of arbitrary arrests, torture, and executions violates the basic principles of international human rights law,” the statement continued.

Former Deputy Maria Grecea, one of the statement’s signatories, urged the international community to step up its efforts. “We cannot stand by while the Iranian regime uses executions as a political weapon. The world must act, and it must act now.”
The Romanian Committee also pointed out that Iran’s Revolutionary Courts often hand down sentences in politically motivated cases without adhering to basic due process standards. The situation is particularly dire for political prisoners like Ehsani and Hassani, whose affiliation with the PMOI/MEK makes them targets for harsh punishment.
The Committee’s appeal underscores the gravity of the situation, urging António Guterres and the United Nations to intervene before it is too late for Ehsani and Hassani. They conclude with a clear call: “We appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to the United Nations taking the necessary and immediate steps in response to our requests.”
