In recent years, Iran’s aggressive actions on the global stage have grown more dangerous, as Tehran continues to extend its influence through military and covert operations far beyond its borders.

The regime’s direct involvement in conflicts, particularly in Europe, has raised alarm in Western capitals. In early September 2024, the U.S. and U.K. jointly accused Tehran of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken remarked that these Iranian missiles enable Russia to expand its reach, targeting areas further from the front lines. This escalation underscores the deepening military ties between Moscow and Tehran, prompting further sanctions from the West.

Iran’s involvement has profoundly impacted the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, Russia has deployed over 8,060 Iranian drones since the full-scale invasion began, resulting in widespread destruction. While Iran’s leadership denies these transfers, Western nations remain unconvinced. Tehran’s increasing entanglement in Europe’s security has been a major concern, as the regime shows no signs of withdrawing its support for Moscow.

Tehran’s destabilizing activities are not limited to Ukraine. For years, the Iranian regime has been implicated in terror plots targeting Europe and dissidents abroad. A 2021 conviction of Iranian diplomat Asadollah Assadi for plotting to bomb the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)’s annual Paris gathering highlights Tehran’s willingness to target its critics globally. The arrest and sentencing of Assadi showed the regime’s use of diplomatic channels to cover its terror plots, further straining Iran’s relationship with European nations.

In 2024, Iran’s campaign against its critics continued with the assassination of Spanish politician Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a vocal critic of Tehran and a supporter of the NCRI. European authorities also uncovered multiple Iranian-linked plots to attack Jews, Iranian dissidents, and political figures in Germany, France, and the U.K. The list of targets extends to former U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as former U.S. officials John Bolton and Mike Pompeo, illustrating the regime’s extensive global network of aggression.

Amid this international offensive, Tehran faces growing unrest at home. Since 2017, waves of uprisings have threatened the regime’s grip on power, prompting a violent crackdown on dissent through executions and mass arrests. Iran’s leadership, in an attempt to deflect from internal instability, projects strength abroad through its involvement in conflicts across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

As Tehran’s aggression grows more dangerous, the West must reassess its approach. The National Council of Resistance of Iran argues that continued leniency has emboldened the regime, fueling its global terror activities. Stronger measures, including meaningful support for the Iranian people’s push for regime change, could offer a sustainable path toward curbing Tehran’s dangerous ambitions on the world stage.
