The majority of the Welsh Parliament has strongly supported democratic reforms in Iran by endorsing Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan, which seeks to establish a democratic republic in the nation.

This endorsement, backed by 36 out of 60 Welsh MPs, calls on the international community to support the Iranian people’s fight for global peace and security.  The endorsement has garnered substantial backing, including support from 13 of the 15 committee chairs in the Welsh Parliament and three ministers. The Welsh MPs’ statement sharply condemns the Iranian regime’s ongoing suppression of its citizens, especially the violent crackdowns during the 2022 uprisings, where unarmed protesters were met with lethal force by security personnel. The statement also draws attention to Iran’s alarming status as the world’s leading executioner per capita, with at least 864 executions recorded in 2023 alone.

A poignant part of the statement recalls the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, a directive from the regime’s Supreme Leader, Ruhollah Khomeini. The MPs criticized the recent trial of over 100 members of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in absentia, labeling it a sham and a precursor to potential terrorist actions against dissidents, particularly in Europe.

The Welsh parliamentarians emphasized that the Iranian regime’s actions are a significant source of instability in the Middle East and beyond. They condemned the regime’s use of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its proxies to spread terrorism, which disrupts both regional and global peace. The MPs called for the international community to support Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan, which advocates for:

– Free elections

– Freedom of speech and assembly

– Abolition of the death penalty

– Gender equality

– Separation of religion and state

– Autonomy for Iran’s ethnic groups

– A non-nuclear Iran

These values, they assert, align with their own democratic and human rights principles.

Furthermore, the MPs condemned the Iranian regime’s actions against opposition members, particularly those in Ashraf-3, Albania, emphasizing their rights under the 1951 Geneva Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights. They called for the international community to recognize the Iranian people’s right to resist and support the MEK Resistance Units in confronting the IRGC.

This bold move by the Welsh Parliament adds to the mounting international pressure on the Iranian regime, urging governments worldwide to implement stricter measures against Iran. These measures include designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization and imposing oil sanctions. The statement underscores the imperative for accountability for human rights violations, particularly the 1988 massacre, and supports the Iranian people’s pursuit of a democratic future.
