A conference held in The Hague on December 9, coinciding with Human Rights Day, brought together Dutch politicians, Iranian activists, and supporters of the Iranian Resistance.

The event, organized by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), served as a platform to discuss the Iranian regime’s widespread human rights violations and to call for a firmer stance from the Dutch government and the European Union.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the NCRI, delivered a keynote address, highlighting the dramatic increase in executions in Iran. “At least 120 prisoners were executed nationwide in November alone, averaging one execution every six hours,” Rajavi revealed, pointing out the existence of over 5,000 individuals on death row in Iran. She criticized the Iranian Judiciary for conducting sham trials against members of the opposition and emphasized the regime’s fear of the growing support for the Iranian Resistance.

Dutch MEP Dorien Rookmaker condemned the ongoing human rights abuses in Iran, especially the 1988 massacre and recent uprisings. Rookmaker criticized the UNHCR’s invitation to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva. “We stand with the Iranian youth in their fight against dictatorship,” Rookmaker stated, highlighting the regime’s attempts to suppress any form of dissent.

Ad Melkert, former UN Special Representative, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the regime’s removal from the UN Group on Women’s Rights and its widespread human rights abuses. He highlighted the regime’s oppressive tactics, including the arbitrary detention of EU nationals.

Former Colombian Senator Ingrid Betancourt discussed Tehran’s expanding influence in Europe, condemning its disinformation campaigns and interference in European affairs. She praised the NCRI and the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) for their democratic opposition to the regime.

Professor Henk de Haan, former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Dutch Parliament, called for international action against the Iranian regime’s human rights violations. He stressed the need for collective action and urged the Dutch government to categorize the regime’s revolutionary grounds as a banned organization.

Loek van Wely, a former Dutch Senator, and renowned Chess Grandmaster, expressed his commitment to the cause of a free Iran. He stressed the importance of sustained pressure for change and voiced his support for listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.

Derk Jan Eppink, a former Dutch MP, called for decisive action against Tehran, urging comprehensive sanctions against key regime figures and the IRGC. He criticized diplomatic engagement with the regime and warned of its burgeoning alliance with Russia.

Concluding the conference, speakers and attendees voiced their solidarity with the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and democracy, condemning the regime’s oppressive rule and calling for international action to hold it accountable for its atrocities. The event underscored the growing concern about human rights violations in Iran and the need for a united global response.
