A surge of international indignation against the Iranian regime has grown over its judiciary’s persistent pursuit and prosecution of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) members.

In a powerful demonstration of unity against these actions, 453 legal experts, international jurists, and legal institutions have published a joint statement condemning Iran’s oppressive legal strategies.

This international consortium of legal minds have implored authorities in democratic nations across Europe and beyond to publicly rebuke the Iranian regime’s harsh measures against MEK members. They stressed the importance of ensuring the protection of human rights for Iranian dissenters globally. A pointed call was also made for the accountability of Iranian officials implicated in heinous acts such as the 1988 mass execution of 30,000 political detainees.

“Our concern is further heightened by past public statements made by Iran’s officials, declaring all affiliates of this organization as mohareb (enemies of God) and subject to execution,” the statement reads. It goes on to highlight how, “over the past four decades, tens of thousands of MEK members and supporters have been executed in Iran on baseless charges.”

Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s sitting president, was notably implicated as a pivotal figure in Tehran’s “death commission” that, during the 1988 massacre, rapidly ordered the execution of several thousand detainees who chose not to renounce their political associations.

This recent maneuver by the Iranian judiciary, notorious for its politically charged executions and incarceration of attorneys defending dissidents, is perceived as a ploy to boost internal repression and expand its crackdown on adversaries outside its national boundaries. Concerns are raised with Iran’s intended use of INTERPOL to retrieve opposition members located abroad.

The statement recalls, “In previous similar attempts, several complaints had been filed in France by affiliates of the Iranian regime against members of the opposition, but after several years of investigations, they were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.”

Iran’s scant respect for global law was starkly exposed during a Belgian trial of a serving Iranian diplomat, sentenced to two decades behind bars for a 2018 plot to bomb an NCRI opposition event near Paris.

The legal consortium expressed alarm over a June 20, 2023 police raid in Ashraf-3, Albania, where many of the MEK members reside, which was instigated based on allegations from the Iranian government.

The closing of the statement is a powerful call to action: “As jurists, lawyers, law professors, and professionals in the field of law, we condemn the Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for international laws and human rights.” The plea emphasizes the pressing need to uphold democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law.
