In her speech, Shkrum underscored the solidarity of Ukrainian women with their Iranian counterparts and delivered a powerful condemnation of Iranian drone attacks on Ukraine.
Highlighting the damaging and deadly impacts of the drone attacks, Shkrum revealed, “Just in May 2023, more than 300 Shahed, Iranian drones, came to Ukraine to kill Ukrainians.” According to her, these unmanned machines targeted churches, schools, hospitals, and humanitarian aid centers.
Shkrum vividly recounted a terrifying incident where her parents in rural Ukraine spotted a black Iranian drone overhead. “They could only hide. And unfortunately, Ukrainians know too well that this is happening 3,000 kilometers away from Iran because the terrorist and dictatorship regime knows no borders, and knows no distance, and knows no mercy,” she explained.
The lawmaker called out the Iran-backed assaults as part of a broader pattern of global threat from Tehran. She linked the oppressive regime’s brutality at home to the international havoc it wreaks. Shkrum noted that, “Iranian regime threatens its own people and kills its own people, that it kills people in the Middle East, but it kills people also all over the world because Ukraine is more than 3,000 kilometers from Iran.”
In her poignant speech, Shkrum also lauded Iranian women for their inspirational struggle for freedom. She declared, “You are such an inspiration to us. Keep on fighting, keep on fighting for freedom. We follow you, we stand with you, and we will do whatever it takes to help you.”
Shkrum pledged further sanctions on Iran and urged for international accountability for the regime’s atrocities. As an international lawyer, she reaffirmed her commitment to the rule of law and promised to fight for more sanctions.
The Ukrainian Parliamentarian concluded her stirring speech with a hopeful note, saying, “I know that Ukraine will win this war and I’m sure I know that Iran will win and democratic Iran will be a prosperous and free country. We stand with you.”
