A consortium of prominent American figures, comprising diplomats, former government officials, and other esteemed personalities, have raised a clarion call against state-supported terrorism and the recently controversial prisoner swap involving Iran.

This collective came forward with an open letter on May 31, stressing the Iranian regime’s involvement in terrorism and the release of Assadollah Assadi, Tehran’s imprisoned diplomat-terrorist.

The letter flagged Iran’s current act of prisoner exchange as not merely a governmental horse trade but a cunning and audacious act of extortion by Iran’s clerical dictatorship. It read, “Iran’s clerical dictatorship has pulled off a stunningly brazen act of extortion and won a free pass for state-supported terrorism. Responsible citizens should consider these facts.”

The gathering, attended by thousands of international supporters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, was targeted by Assadi, who was operating an activated sleeper cell.

Highlighting Tehran's scheming role in orchestrating a mass-casualty incident on European soil, the letter revealed Assadi's thwarted attempt in June 2018 to detonate a bomb at an event near Paris.

Assadi, an agent of Iran’s Intelligence Ministry’s “Department 312,” misused his diplomatic immunity in Austria to devise this heinous act. After due process, the Antwerp Court of First Instance handed him a 20-year imprisonment, a decision upheld on appeal.

The letter also disclosed that the bomb used was manufactured and tested in Iran before being smuggled from Tehran to Vienna under diplomatic cover. This incident underscored Iran’s covert aggression. The authors drew parallels with the Manchester bombing in 2017 that claimed 23 lives, indicating the severity of Tehran’s actions and calling for a robust response.

The recent prisoner swap involving Belgium and Iran’s clerical regime, facilitated by Oman, has alarmed the signatories. They stress that the Iranian regime unjustly incarcerated Belgian citizen Olivier Vandecasteele, using him as leverage against Belgium.

They urged Western governments to confront Iran’s state-supported terrorism, its burgeoning nuclear program, and its destabilizing influence in the Middle East. The letter concluded with a pledge to fully support any serious policy dialogue against Iran’s persistent aggression.

The authors expressed regret over the Belgian government’s acquiescence to Iran's actions, stressing the importance of recognizing Iran's continuing malignant behavior.

Finally, the signatories warned against the increasingly visible covert aggression from Iran in various European countries. They underscored the urgent need for a serious policy dialogue on Iran’s actions, which now marks its 45th year. This letter serves as a potent indictment of Iran’s actions, highlighting the pressing need for international unity in countering state-supported terrorism.
