Protests continue in Iran despite the government’s heavy crackdown on dissent.

With the wave of protests that began in September showing no signs of slowing down, many are wondering whether it will lead to the downfall of the regime or whether the mullahs will ultimately regain control. What measures could lead to the regime’s downfall, what are the possible outcomes, and how can the international community help the Iranian people?

The recent protests were sparked by the tragic murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody. The protesters quickly turned their anger towards the entire regime and clashed with security forces. While some believe that the state will eventually crush the protests, others believe that the regime can stay in power by making some reforms.

The continued protests, despite the government’s efforts to crack down on dissent, suggest that the uprising is organized in nature. Additionally, the mass killing of protesters can rapidly backfire, as seen in the November 2019 protests where 1,500 people were killed in a few days. The recent chemical attacks on girls’ schools have also led to popular protests, with people chanting “Death to Khamenei.”

Furthermore, Iran’s society has shown that it is done with the regime’s pretense of moderation. The myth of reformism ended in the 2018 protests when people chanted “Reformists, hardliners, the game is over.”  Expectations that the regime’s Revolutionary Guards might be an instrument of change are also unrealistic.

The IRGC dominates Iran’s economy and is the primary instrument of oppression, controlling every aspect of life in the country. Its dissolution would lead to the downfall of the regime.

The appointment of Ebrahim Raisi, an unscrupulous mass murderer, as president in 2021, further solidified Khamenei's absolute control over the regime.

The solution lies on the Iranian streets, where people are demanding regime change and targeting its symbols.  Western countries can support the Iranian people’s right to self-defense and overthrow the regime by designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

In conclusion, the Iranian uprising is an organized movement that shows no signs of slowing down despite the government’s efforts to crush dissent. The international community must support the Iranian people’s inherent right to self-defense and overthrow the regime by designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The solution to the Iranian crisis lies on the Iranian streets, where people are demanding change and rejecting any form of dictatorship.

The organized resistance movement, led by the principal opposition group People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), is cracking the wall of oppression and spreading courage in society.
