On Monday, Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Iranian regime, acknowledged the failure of his regime’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, whose presidency he had described as the “sweetest event” in 2021.

Khamenei acknowledged the regime’s economic failure in remarks broadcast on state TV during a meeting with some regime experts, reversing himself and the bogus claims he and Raisi had made about economic and social prosperity! Khamenei acknowledged “poverty and visible living problems,” “difficult livelihood of Iranian families,” and “unemployment and migration of millions of citizens.”

“Your economic grievances and concerns are valid. We have a difficult livelihood for families in the country. The only solution to eradicate poverty and increase the well-being of families is economic growth,” he said. Nonetheless, by praising the regime’s nuclear program, for which he has squandered billions of dollars of national wealth, Khamenei confirmed that he was simply crying crocodile tears for the people.

He admitted that popular protests are the result of the regime’s corruption, mismanagement, and incompetence. He also admitted that the regime’s international and economic legitimacy had been eroded by the fall in the value of Iran’s national currency against the US dollar. “In the modern world, a country’s situation is largely attributed to its economic state. So, when its economy declines and its national currency’s value plunges, that country loses its place in terms of international ranking.”

Despite being the regime’s highest authority, he avoided responsibility and blamed it on others. “Of course, I do not have an executive approach. I show the path and follow up with authorities on taking it.” He also acknowledged the system’s bankruptcy and Raisi’s government’s massive budget deficit.

It is worth noting that, while presenting his plan last week, Raisi claimed that his government's budget bill has no deficit, causing quite a stir in the regime's handpicked parliament.

Raisi is best known for his role in the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988, the majority of whom were members and supporters of Iran’s main opposition, the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

The election of Raisi as president was the final piece of Khamenei’s power consolidation puzzle. The major Iran protests in 2018 and 2019 shook the regime’s foundation, and Khamenei realized that even the slightest opposition within his regime’s ranks would hasten its demise.

So why would Khamenei now try to deflect any blame from himself as the regime’s supreme leader? The answer can be found on the streets of Tehran and other cities, where people have been continuing their uprising to bring down the entire regime.
