According to a Setareh Sobh daily article from August 20, 2022, 800 Iranian workers die each year because there aren’t enough facilities to ensure their minimum level of safety. This statistic highlights the brutal exploitation of workers and the worsening of their conditions under the mullahs’ rule. The living conditions of Iranian workers have gotten worse since Ebrahim Raisi was elected president. The fact that eight employees committed suicide in the span of 70 days is just one example. Two more employees, Mohammad Mansouri, 32, and Ali Mohammad Karimi, who were both workers, committed suicide on August 7 and 8 in the province of Ilam, according to the same daily.

One of the most significant rights of workers is “workplace safety,” which has consistently been disregarded in workplaces run by mullahs. On April 17, 1994, Salam newspaper reported that 204 people had died in workplace accidents in 1993 when there were roughly 57 million people living in the nation. Even though there are 85 million people in the country today, 800 workers still lose their lives in accidents every year, 29 years later. Although the population has grown by an additional 50%, the number of casualties has increased by 40%.

Articles 85, 92, and 95 of the labor code of the regime state: “In order to preserve the workforce and financial resources of the country, observance of the instructions formulated by the High Council of Technical Safety and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education  shall be binding on all workshops, employers, employees, and Additionally, “All the units, subject to Article 85 of this Law, where the serving individuals are exposed to the diseases arising from work due to the type of the work involved, shall open a medical file for each of them, have them examined and tested by medical and health centers at least once a year, and preserve the results in the related files.”

The actual number of workers who pass away in hazardous conditions with no regard for their health is much higher and is never reported.

“The employer or the officials of the units mentioned in Article 85 of this Law shall be responsible for the enforcement of the technical and Labour hygiene regulations and criteria. Should there occur an accident as a result of non—observance of these regulations by the employer or the officials in charge of the unit, the said employer or the officials shall be liable in penal and legal terms and also in respect of the penalties laid down in this Law.”

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) Labor Committee calls on the International Labor Organization and other pertinent UN agencies, as well as all labor syndicates and unions worldwide, to denounce the mullahs’ regime’s anti-labor policies and grave and persistent transgressions of international laws and standards with regard to Iranian workers.
