In June 2018, Iranian regime agents tried to carry out a terrorist attack on a rally for Iran’s resistance movement, The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) at a venue not far from Paris.
The Belgian court sentenced Assadollah Assadi
Fortunately, the plot was discovered before any human rights abuses could take place. In November 2020 the leader of the plot and his 3 arrested accomplices were brought to trial where they were eventually convicted all four were sentenced with the key perpetrator, Assadollah Assadi, facing a 20-year prison term.
Some Western policymakers may now be glad that this case has been solved and really believe that relations with Iran will get back to normal. This would be too good to be true as Assadi’s prosecution has shown to the world that Iranian terrorism will continue to threaten Europe and the U.S. until it is finally stopped.
Iranian terrorism at both home and abroad must end
Now the E.U and the international community should rethink their approach on how to deal with the Iranian regime and a new set of ideas should be suggested that could bring the root of Iranian terrorism at both home and abroad to an end.
Unfortunately, so far, Josep Borell, the EU’s head of External Actions has suggested that the EU’s intention is of continuing a “maximum diplomacy” strategy with the terrorist regime in Iran.
Europe-Iran Business Forum
Borell has even said he intends to participate in an online “Europe-Iran Business Forum” with the Iranian regime’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, on March 1st-3rd.
The fact of the matter is that in the long term no one in Europe will benefit from this sort of appeasement. All it will do is allow the current Iranian regime to continue with its human rights violations in order to maintain its position of power.
Support the Iranian resistance movement
However, not everyone agrees with Borell both in Europe and the USA. There is growing support internationally and within Iran to endorse the pro-democracy Resistance movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) that is challenging the Iranian regime.
There are members of the US House of Representatives and European politicians who believe that trade ties with the Iranian regime should be limited until the regime changes its terrorist assaults on the opposition movement both in Iran and overseas.
One key statement suggested that Iran should pack-up its terrorist roots in Europe and promise to never again engage in this sort of activity.
The American congressmen’s statement
The American congressmen’s statement is urging cooperation in holding Zarif and other leading figures accountable for “breaching diplomatic privileges.” This is unlikely to happen unless the international community agrees. But in addition, the US resolution has suggested that the international community seeks allies within Iran to help change the country’s government and “stand with the people of Iran” and recognize the rights of the Iranian people in their struggle to change the political system to a democratic, secular and the nonnuclear Republic of Iran.
If the regime as it is today is allowed to continue its existence a similar thwarted bombing attempt as the one targeting the 2018 Free Iran rally could happen again.
Iranian people fighting for a democratic future
Meanwhile, on the domestic front, there have been numerous protest rallies challenging the current political system that began in the late 80s.
Each time the regime has tried to suppress these uprisings through multiple arrests, tortures, and executions. This hasn’t stopped the opposition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran).
In the end, it is only by protecting the Iranian people in their fight for a democratic future that the EU and the US can ever hope to permanently eliminate the Iranian terror threat from the world. For these reasons, Western governments should listen to recommendations and be more assertive toward the Iranian regime.
