In the run-up to the first anniversary of the major uprising that started in November 2019, the Iranian regime is getting ready for a potential resurgence of unrest.
State-run media outlets have been reporting on the possibility of further major protests and regime officials have even described the Coronavirus health crisis as a blessing because it is taking the focus away from the discontent that is so present in society. Over 144,100 people have died of the coronavirus in Iran, according to reports by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran).

Earlier this week, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei spoke about the “security” issues that the regime faces, saying that it is of utmost importance to protect it against protests. He also spoke about the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran). – the regime’s main opposition – showing just how much of a threat it poses to the regime’s existence.
All the time, the country is still battling against the Coronavirus pandemic. More than 144,100 have died in Iran after contracting the virus that can be deadly to many, and scientific and medical experts are urging the government to implement lockdowns in certain parts of the country, in particular, to preserve the health service that is struggling under the pressure.

Yet, during his recent speech, Iran’s Supreme Leader neglected to speak about the health crisis at all, instead preferring to provoke French leaders in the aftermath of two recent terrorist attacks. He questioned the integrity of France’s leaders and asked how they can “defend human rights and freedom” when they host the “most ruthless and savage terrorist of the world in its country”. The terrorists he is referring to are the (PMOI / MEK Iran) and he said that their “refuge” is Paris.
The (PMOI / MEK Iran), for several years, held its annual Free Iran rally just outside Paris. The opposition group was welcomed there and many French officials participated in the gathering, voicing their support for the democratic opposition and the people of Iran’s desire for freedom and the respect of human rights. And ironically, one of the Iranian regime’s diplomats is currently on trial for his participation in the regime’s plot to bomb the 2018 Free Iran gathering in Paris.

In the past three years, there have been three major uprisings. With everyone that takes place, the regime gets weaker and weaker. Coupled with the domestic unrest, the regime’s increasing international isolation is worrying officials.
The regime’s response to the November 2019 uprising was violent and brutal. Thousands of protesters were injured, many more thousands arrested, and more than 1,500 killed by suppressive forces. Reuters confirmed in a special report on December 23, 2019, about the deadly crackdown on November nationwide protests in Iran the death toll of 1500 that was announced by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) on December 15, 2019.

The people have made it clear that they will not be forced into silence. The people want the regime to collapse so that they can move forward with a democratic leadership that respects their rights. The (PMOI / MEK Iran) has played a major role in amplifying their voice and drawing attention to the international community of their struggle.
The people and the (PMOI / MEK Iran) really are the biggest threat to the regime’s existence and the regime knows it. That is why it is focusing so much on the opposition.
