The regime had conspired to attack an international rally, held by the (PMOI / MEK Iran) and NCRI in Paris in 2018 and Assahdollah had a particularly hands-on role in the organization of the plot.

Dr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former Vice President of the European Parliament and President of the International Committee In Search of Justice believes that the prosecution of an Iranian diplomat, Assadollah Assadi, should mark the end of the regime’s impunity, as he discussed in his blog post published to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) on 30 September 2020.

Iranian diplomat Assahdollah Assadi will face prosecution in Belgium in November for conspiracy to commit terrorist murder. The regime had conspired to attack an international rally, held by the (PMOI / MEK Iran) and NCRI in Paris in 2018 and Assahdollah had a particularly hands-on role in the organization of the plot.

The Iranian regime has attempted to deploy terrorist tactics against the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) and NCRI on numerous occasions and this is yet another example of the lengths that the regime will go to try and destroy the resistance.

In his blogpost, Dr. Alejo Vidal said: “Assadi’s actions underscore just how much danger results from allowing terrorist diplomats to live and work in European capitals with little monitoring and little consequence for their illicit activities. Anyone of them could turn out to be the head of a sleeper cell that is poised to set off explosives or carry out assassinations in the heart of Europe.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Iranian embassies in Europe have been used as the primary channel for Tehran’s terrorism plots. In the 1980s and ’90s, the regime carried out a number of assassinations of Iranian opposition activities, including Kazem Rajavi, the NCRI’s representative to the United Nations.

Dr. Vidal stated, “Disgracefully, Tehran faced little real consequence from any of these killings, and thus had little incentive to slow the expansion of its network of terrorist-diplomats.”

While the primary target of Assadi’s terrorism plot was undoubtedly the NCRI’s president-elect Maryam Rajavi, the annual rally attracts upwards of 100,000 attendees and this includes many high-profile international political figures.

Dr. Vidal continued: “As Assadi’s trial date approaches, the international community should actively remind itself that his willingness to target Western politicians is not unusual within the ranks of Iranian officials. The 2018 terror plot may have been unusually careless as a result of the regime’s desperate desire to crush dissent in the wake of the nationwide uprising at the beginning of that year. But this does not mean that the essential nature of the plot was any sort of an anomaly. Instead, it merely revealed the ruthlessness and the sense of impunity that has guided the mullahs’ regime throughout its four decades in power.”

It is of vital importance that the Belgium court impose the maximum sentence on Assadi and send a warning to the Iranian regime that their days of impunity are over. The regime can no longer be allowed to continue committing devastating criminal acts with no accountability.

Dr. Vidal concluded: “The mullahs´ regime has lived in a bloodbath since its inception. It is time for Western democracies to stop turning a blind eye on such criminal dictatorship.”
