In a recent parliamentary debate, members of the UK Parliament voiced serious concerns about the growing threats posed by Iran’s clerical regime, both globally and within the United Kingdom. The session highlighted the urgency felt by lawmakers to protect Iranian dissidents in Britain and to counter Tehran’s ongoing campaign of repression and state-sponsored terror.
Jim Shannon, Democratic Unionist Party MP for Strangford, delivered a powerful speech defending the Iranian diaspora. He described the regime in Tehran as “decadent, violent, and evil,” and warned that many Iranians who have sought refuge in the UK remain at risk. “These individuals escaped by the skin of their teeth,” Shannon stated, “and now face real threats from Iranian agents operating even here.” He urged the UK government to guarantee the safety of Iranian dissidents, emphasizing that they live in fear and cannot safely return to their homeland under current conditions.

Paul Waugh, MP for Rochdale, framed Iran’s actions as part of a larger global struggle. “Britain is at war with a modern enemy,” he said, describing it as “the fascism of Islamist extremism and state-sponsored terrorism.” Waugh stressed the importance of confronting the ideology that underpins such regimes and declared, “We will never surrender to terrorism or its ideology.”
A major theme of the debate was the repeated call from MPs to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Many expressed frustrations over the government’s continued delays in taking this step. In response, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat explained that the government is currently reviewing a report by Jonathan Hall KC, an independent reviewer of terrorism legislation. “We are considering it very carefully,” he noted, “and will not hesitate to act if further measures are required.”

The debate revealed a growing bipartisan consensus that Iran’s influence must be curtailed. Lawmakers from multiple parties echoed the view that Iran’s clerical regime poses not just a regional threat but a direct danger to the UK and other democratic nations. There was also agreement that Tehran is actively exporting its repression beyond its borders and attempting to silence dissent through intimidation abroad.
As the UK grapples with rising security challenges, the message from Parliament was clear: more decisive action is needed. The protection of exiled Iranian dissidents, the potential proscription of the IRGC, and a broader strategy to confront Tehran’s extremist ideology remain high on the political agenda.
