On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the “No to Executions Tuesday” campaign marked its 44th consecutive week with a significant act of resistance: hunger strikes in 25 prisons across Iran.
This ongoing movement seeks to expose and challenge the Iranian regime’s increasing use of executions as a tool to suppress dissent and instill fear. The campaign issued a statement condemning recent alarming developments, including death sentences for two political prisoners, Mehran Hasanzadeh and Hamid Abdollahzadeh, detained during the nationwide protests of 2022. It also highlighted the sentencing of six defendants in the “Ekbatan case,” which it described as part of a strategy to deter protests through fear.
“These rulings are not about justice,” the statement asserted. “They serve purely political goals to spread terror and suppress society.”The campaign referenced a 2022 leaked audio recording allegedly revealing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s directive to execute dozens of protesters, framing these actions as “retribution” to maximize fear. This chilling strategy has seen grim results: at least 25 executions in the past week and over 140 last month alone, leaving countless families grieving.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, the statement called attention to four Arab political prisoners in Ahvaz’s Sheiban Prison, who have been in solitary confinement for over 40 days with their fate unknown. “Their lives are in grave danger, and we must not forget them,” the campaign urged. The hunger strikes in prisons like Evin, Ghezel Hesar, and Karaj Central Prison reflect the participants’ commitment to fighting these injustices despite severe conditions.
Protesters demand international intervention, calling on human rights advocates, political leaders, and global organizations to amplify efforts against the regime’s escalating use of executions. The campaign coincides with the United Nations’ 71st condemnation of Iran for human rights violations, underscoring the international community’s scrutiny.

However, campaign organizers stress the need for collective action to halt what they describe as a “machinery of death.” “The economic crises plaguing Iranian society are met not with solutions but with increased executions,” the statement read. “We must unite to stop this oppression.” As the hunger strikes persist across 25 prisons, the “No to Executions Tuesday” campaign remains a powerful symbol of resistance, urging the global community to confront Iran’s widespread human rights abuses.
