In a stunning example of political suppression, Iranian authorities have extended the imprisonment of Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner who has already endured 15 years of incarceration for her activism.

Despite completing her original sentence in October 2023, Monfared now faces an additional two years behind bars. Her imprisonment is emblematic of the regime’s crackdown on dissenting voices, especially those connected to the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK), and highlights the state’s continuous efforts to silence critics.

Monfared’s ordeal began in 2009 following her participation in the Ashura protests, an outcry against the disputed presidential election results that year. Five months later, she was sentenced to 15 years for “enmity against God,” with allegations of ties to the PMOI, a charge widely regarded as unjust. Her true offense, however, was her relentless pursuit of justice for her family—four of her siblings were executed in the 1980s during a brutal government crackdown on political dissidents.

While in prison, Monfared has shown unwavering courage. In 2016, she filed a formal complaint calling for an investigation into her siblings’ executions, a move that led to increased restrictions and, eventually, her transfer to a remote prison in Semnan, far from her family. She has endured significant hardship, with no access to furlough for medical treatment or to see her children. Her defiance, however, continues to inspire both inside and outside of Iran. In a 2017 letter to foreign ambassadors, she exposed the inhumane conditions within Evin Prison, describing systemic abuse, neglect, and the prison’s facade of normalcy during official visits.

The Iranian regime’s repression extends beyond Monfared to other PMOI supporters, many of whom face death sentences after enduring torture and unfair trials. Notable cases include boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafaie Sani and long-time activists like Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, who, despite severe conditions, remain steadfast. This systemic persecution targets anyone aligned with PMOI values, subjecting them to months of torture and unlawful sentencing.

Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, has highlighted Monfared’s case as a glaring instance of the regime’s efforts to quell dissent by silencing voices seeking accountability. Human rights groups globally stand behind Monfared, whose voice echoes a broader struggle for justice among Iranians. As she endures yet another sentence, her resilience stands as a testament to her indomitable spirit and to the enduring hope for justice in Iran.
