As the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) marks its 60th anniversary, the organization continues to stand as a symbol of resistance and sacrifice. Over the past six decades, the PMOI has evolved from a small group of activists into a global movement.
Despite numerous challenges, the organization has maintained its commitment to the cause of freedom for the Iranian people, battling against both monarchy and theocratic rule. The PMOI’s mission has always been clear: to secure freedom from oppression, inequality, and discrimination for all Iranians. This includes championing fundamental human rights such as freedom of thought, expression, and assembly, while also rejecting ethnic, religious, class, and gender-based inequalities. These ideals are not merely theoretical for the PMOI; they have consistently demonstrated their willingness to pay the price for freedom with great personal sacrifice.
The struggle for freedom in Iran has long been a perilous one. Historically, many movements and political figures have faltered under pressure, choosing to align with oppressive regimes for comfort and survival. However, the PMOI has remained steadfast in its opposition to both the Shah’s dictatorship and the clerical regime that followed. Throughout its history, the PMOI has never compromised on its principles, even under intense pressure from the regime. As PMOI Secretary General Zahra Merrikhi remarked, “Taking a stand and resisting at any cost has become synonymous with the PMOI.”

This commitment was tested multiple times. Perhaps most notably in 1981, when Iran’s supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini sought to force the PMOI into silence or endorsement of his regime’s religious dogma. Despite attempts to coerce the organization, the PMOI refused to bow to religious discrimination or the suppression of diverse beliefs.
Massoud Rajavi, a key leader of the Iranian Resistance, made it clear early on that the PMOI’s vision of Islam differed fundamentally from Khomeini’s version, especially in terms of individual freedoms and the right of the people to govern. The PMOI rejected Khomeini’s oppressive laws and practices, standing firmly for the rights of nationalities and gender equality.
From surviving the SAVAK’s threats during the Shah’s regime to enduring the bloody crackdowns of the mullahs’ regime, the PMOI has remained resolute. Today, as it commemorates its 60th anniversary, the organization continues to fight for a free, democratic, and equal Iran. According to Zahra Merrikhi, this uncompromising resistance will persist until the regime is overthrown, and the Iranian people can finally enjoy the rights they deserve.
