The “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign in Iran, initiated by political prisoners, has entered its 32nd week, gaining national and international attention.

This movement, born out of a growing frustration with the Iranian regime’s extensive use of the death penalty, has come to symbolize defiance against tyranny and a powerful call for justice and human rights. Since its inception, the campaign has involved weekly hunger strikes led by prisoners from various facilities across the country. On Tuesday, September 3rd, inmates from 21 prisons, including Evin, Ghezel Hesar, and Central Karaj, participated in a collective hunger strike.

Notably, prisons in Asadabad and Bam joined the effort, signaling the campaign’s expansion. The prisoners’ collective statement condemns the “inhuman sentences and executions,” advocating for the abolition of the death penalty. They described the torture and death of two fellow prisoners, Mohammad Mirmosavi and Komeyl Abolhassani, as tragic violations of the right to life.

The growing resistance comes against a backdrop of recent state violence. In Sabzevar, a public execution took place, and a political prisoner, Abbas Touranji, faced imminent death after being sentenced behind closed doors. Such events have fueled anger and resistance among detainees, who argue that the regime uses the death penalty as a tool of suppression. The prisoners are appealing to the Iranian public and international community for support, emphasizing the need for unified action against the state’s violence.

The campaign’s message of defiance has resonated beyond Iran’s borders, receiving support from 68 human rights organizations, both Iranian and international. Elisabetta Zamparutti, co-founder of the human rights group ‘Hands Off Cain,’ pledged to join the hunger strikes every Tuesday in solidarity with the movement. Such international backing demonstrates the campaign’s growing impact on the global stage.

Despite ongoing repression, the political prisoners involved remain committed to their cause. They continue to defy the Iranian regime, determined not to be silenced. One of the most powerful voices comes from Amir-Hossein Moradi, a political prisoner in Evin Prison, who penned a letter describing his imprisonment as unjust.

Moradi’s words underscore the enduring spirit of resistance, as he affirms that neither he nor his fellow detainees will request mercy. Instead, he insists that it is the regime that must answer for its crimes. The “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign, now bolstered by international solidarity, represents a critical challenge to Iran’s oppressive policies, with participants and supporters standing firm in their call for an end to state violence and the death penalty.
