Severe floods hit the North Khorasan and Khorasan Razavi provinces in northeastern Iran on Friday, causing widespread damage and leaving several people missing.
The heavy rainfall, unexpected given the prevailing high temperatures in most parts of the country, caught many residents off guard. In the city of Chamanaran, hundreds of vehicles were ensnared by the sudden deluge. Villages such as Marshak and Kardeh near Mashhad experienced significant vehicular damage. The flooding in North Khorasan led to the closure of the Bojnourd to Raz and Jargalan road, with many homes and roads in Sarhad, Qushkhaneh, and Titkanlu of Shirvan inundated.
The Red Crescent director in Khorasan Razavi reported that one person went missing near the Dolatabad Dam in Chamanaran, where several vehicles were also trapped in floodwaters. Additionally, several nature enthusiasts went missing in the Shamakhal Valley in Dargaz due to severe rainfall. The provincial disaster management director confirmed that five vehicles were caught in the floodwaters in Marshak and Kurdish villages, emphasizing the heavy damage inflicted upon these areas.

Severe #Flooding and Hailstorm Devastate Mashhad and Sabzevarhttps://t.co/u2WWmlHu9e— NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) May 17, 2024
Residents have voiced their frustration over the regime’s neglect of essential infrastructure, attributing the recurring flood damage to systemic mismanagement. The unexpected summer rainfall in parts of Fars Province and the northern strip of the country, including Mashhad, exacerbated the challenges faced by the affected communities. This incident underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in Iran to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters in the future.
Criticism of the Iranian regime’s priorities is mounting. Instead of investing in critical infrastructure to prevent such disasters, the regime has focused on regional adventurism, ballistic missile development, and nuclear advancements. This misallocation of resources has left the country vulnerable to natural calamities, neglecting the fundamental needs and safety of its people. The severe floods serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for comprehensive disaster management strategies and infrastructure development to protect communities from the devastating effects of natural disasters.

The search for the missing individuals continues as the affected regions begin the arduous task of recovery and rebuilding.
As the residents of North Khorasan and Khorasan Razavi provinces struggle to recover from the catastrophic floods, the calls for accountability and better governance are growing louder. The hope is that this disaster will prompt a reevaluation of priorities, leading to a more resilient and prepared nation in the face of future natural calamities.
