The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), reported that on 26 April 2021 saw the clerical regime destroy the Khavaran Cemetery in Tehran. This is one of several gravesites used by the regime to secretly bury thousands of political prisoners executed in the mass purge of Iranian prisoners in 1988.
Crime against humanity
By doing this, the regime is endeavoring to cover traces of their serious crime against humanity. The 1988 massacre has been examined by multiple international rights groups, such as the six United Nations Human rights experts who in September 2020 issued a letter demanding transparency about the massacre.
The regime has also recently tried to force people from the Bahai community to bury loved ones in Khavaran, much to their refusal.
Covering up their horrific crimes
The regime has been intentionally covering up their horrific crimes for years now, however, by destroying the mass graves they will erase evidence of this specific atrocity. The regime has also demolished mass graves of the 1988 massacre throughout the country in Ahvaz, Tabriz, and Mashhad.
The martyrs’ graves in Behesht-e Reza Cemetery in Mashhad were destroyed by regime authorities in 2017 along with the Vadi Rahmat Cemetery in Tabriz. In 2020, a mass grave in the city of Ahvaz in Southwest Iran was decimated. Local authorities tried to construct a road over the area to literally bury the evidence of the crimes against humanity.
Maryam Rajavi has strongly denounced
The president of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Maryam Rajavi has strongly denounced the destruction of the regime for the graves in Khavaran Cemetery. Rajavi implored the UN Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Human Rights Council, and international human rights groups to take swift action to stop the continued decimation of the martyr’s graves and intervene in the regime’s attempts to pressure the Iranian Bahai community.
Madam Rajavi illustrate, “one of the most harmful consequences of the policy of appeasement was providing impunity to the ruling murderers, whose crimes started in the early 1980s, reached new heights during the 1988 Massacre and have continued to this day,”
Amnesty International statement
Amnesty International issued a warning statement in October 2020 about the destruction of mass grave sites occupied by the martyrs of the 1988 massacre. Speaking to a report of the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Amnesty International said: “the international community must ensure that the geographical coordinates and information related to mass graves are identified and documented by a well-organized global procedure.”
“The purpose of these illegal acts is not only to prevent the handover of the remains to the families but also to block the path of litigation and judicial justice for the 1988 victims,” Amnesty International added.
