US political figures voice support for Iranian opposition in wake of the Belgian court’s conviction of Iranian diplomat terrorists.
On Thursday the 4th of February 2021, a court in Antwerp sentenced Iranian terrorist diplomat Assadollah Assadi to 20 years in prison. He has been described as the mastermind behind the plot to bomb the Iranian opposition, The People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Free Iran rally just outside Paris in June 2018.
Conviction of Iranian diplomat terrorist
The verdict was welcomed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and leader Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the target of the Assadi plot, who called on European countries to take action now that the terrorist threat has been established.
A number of political and national security figures in the United States spoke about the verdict and the next steps that should be taken. They participated in an online event organized by the NCRI and gave their views on the situation.

Governor Tom Ridge
Former US Secretary of State for Homeland Security Tom Ridge called on leaders across the world to put their support behind the NCRI for its democratic values. He described the organization as the “largest, best organized and most popular democratic alternative to the regime” that has spent decades working towards a peaceful, democratic, non-nuclear, and tolerant Iran that will respect the rights of the people.
Over the past few years, the NCRI has been gaining more and more support, especially from political figures and dignitaries across the world, as evidenced by their attendance at the annual Free Iran Gathering. Ridge described the NCRI as Iran’s government in waiting, highlighting his high regard for the organization and its values and objectives.

Patrick Kennedy
The former member of the US House of Representatives Patrick Kennedy expressed his delight that Assadi was given the maximum prison sentence demanded by prosecutors. He said that it is no secret that Iran has been behind many acts of terrorism over the years, yet the regime has always, somehow, managed to avoid being held accountable. Kennedy said that this time the Iranian regime “was caught red-handed” and that the evidence against it was “overwhelming”.
Like the other speakers, Kennedy voiced his support for the NCRI, agreeing that it is the most viable and only legitimate alternative to the Iranian regime. He said that this was “in no small part because of its capacity to threaten the regime’s legitimacy at home and abroad”.

Col. Wesley Martin
Col. Wesley Martin who has worked alongside the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK), the sister organization of the NCRI, described the Iranian regime’s failed attack in 2018 “as much an attack on the freedoms of speech, worship, from want and from fear, as it was on the rally’s participants in Paris”. He said that this foiled plot is just a further example of how threatened the Iranian regime is by its opposition.
Now is the time for the European Union to really take action and change its ineffective policies towards Iran. Iran is the number one state sponsor of terrorism and it must finally be treated as such. The Iranian regime is no different from the other terrorists that have been wreaking havoc across the world.
