Michael Rubin’s articles and interviews featured prominently in multiple Iranian state-run newspapers, echoing the regime’s propaganda narratives

In a detailed rebuttal published in Townhall, Dr. Ali Safavi, a member of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) Foreign Affairs Committee, systematically dismantles Michael Rubin’s latest allegations against the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Safavi exposes Rubin’s longstanding alignment with Tehran’s propaganda machine, emphasizing his selective outrage that ignores the Iranian regime’s systemic human rights abuses, including the execution of minors.

Safavi asserts that Rubin, a self-styled analyst, lacks credibility due to his troubling ties with the Iranian regime. He highlights Rubin’s access to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) archives, raising concerns about his objectivity. According to Safavi, Rubin’s attacks on the MEK align too closely with Tehran’s disinformation efforts, calling into question his motivations.

The article suggests that Rubin recycles debunked accusations against the MEK, often linking back to his own previous writings rather than citing independent, credible sources. One of Rubin’s claims, that the MEK isolates children from public and multicultural education, is dismissed by Safavi, who points to MEK members’ children excelling at prestigious universities in the U.S. and Europe. He further counters Rubin’s labeling of the MEK as a “cult” by drawing comparisons to religious and military institutions that maintain structured educational environments.

Safavi underscores the sacrifices made by MEK members in their fight against the Iranian dictatorship. He contrasts their commitment to democracy with that of Reza Pahlavi, the Shah’s son, who has publicly admitted he would not permanently return to Iran even if the current regime falls. This distinction, Safavi argues, highlights the MEK’s legitimacy as a resistance movement, further invalidating Rubin’s claims.

Thhttps://twitter.com/amsafavi/status/1709586773532196937e article also delves into Rubin’s past missteps, including his advocacy for Ahmad Chalabi and the Iraq War, as well as his ties to the Lincoln Group, a PR firm caught planting pro-war propaganda in the media. Safavi notes that Rubin’s anti-MEK rhetoric is frequently echoed in Iranian state-run media outlets, further suggesting his alignment with Tehran’s interests.

Safavi concludes that Rubin’s persistent attacks on the MEK reveal more about his own biases than about the opposition group itself. If the MEK were truly insignificant, he argues, neither Tehran nor Rubin would expend such effort in discrediting it. Instead, their relentless smears serve as evidence of the MEK’s growing influence and its potential threat to the Iranian regime.

The full rebuttal is available on Townhall, where Safavi provides an exhaustive takedown of Rubin’s accusations, reinforcing the MEK’s role as a legitimate political resistance force rather than the extremist group Rubin portrays.
