In a bold act of defiance against Iran’s escalating use of capital punishment, prisoners across 27 facilities have joined the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign, with many resorting to hunger strikes.
The movement, now in its 47th week, underscores growing dissent against the regime’s increasing reliance on executions as a means to retain power.Recent reports reveal that Tabas and Khorin Varamin prisons are the latest to join the campaign, amplifying its reach. This expansion comes amid grim statistics: at least 40 individuals were executed in the past week alone, many for minor drug-related offenses. The regime’s execution spree has drawn widespread condemnation, with activists labeling it as a mechanism to silence dissent and maintain control.
The campaign’s spotlight also shines on egregious cases of systemic injustice. Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh, sentenced to death on espionage charges after a dubious trial, has been transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison, heightening fears that his execution is imminent. Similarly, political prisoner Saman Mohammadi Khiarah, incarcerated for 15 years, now faces execution after being placed in solitary confinement.
Prisoners and activists are resolute in their resistance. Hunger strikes have become a poignant form of protest, symbolizing solidarity with death row inmates and condemning the regime’s practices. The campaign’s full statement highlights the disproportionate targeting of marginalized communities, particularly in Sistan and Baluchestan, where at least 10 executed prisoners hailed from.

Activists accuse the regime of hypocrisy, pointing to revelations of a drug factory linked to Iran’s government that supplied narcotics globally while individuals are hanged for possessing mere grams of drugs. This glaring contradiction underscores the regime’s exploitative and oppressive policies.
“The day of public awakening to dismantle the gallows in Iran is near,” declared campaign organizers, urging the Iranian populace to amplify the voices of death row inmates and their families. Their call to action stresses the urgency of combating the regime’s “execution machinery” and fostering widespread resistance. On December 17, 2024, prisoners from 27 facilities, including Evin, Ghezel Hesar, and Mashhad prisons, will partake in hunger strikes. Their unified stand reflects growing momentum against the regime’s brutal policies and amplifies hope for systemic change in Iran.

As the campaign gains traction, it sends a powerful message: the fight against injustice in Iran persists, with prisoners and activists at the forefront of resistance against state oppression.
