The Dutch Group of Friends of a Free Iran (FOFI) has issued a powerful plea to the international community and the United Nations, calling for urgent intervention to stop the impending execution of two Iranian political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani, 69, and Mehdi Hassani, 48.

The men, both supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), were sentenced to death by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court on charges of rebellion and corruption—charges the group insists are fabricated. Ehsani and Hassani have been imprisoned in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison since their arrest in 2022, enduring severe physical and psychological torture. FOFI’s appeal highlights their case as emblematic of a broader campaign of repression by the Iranian regime, which has intensified its use of executions to suppress political dissent.

In its statement, FOFI emphasized the alarming scale of Iran’s execution rate. In 2023 alone, 850 people were executed, and in August 2024, the number reached over 160. Under the leadership of President Masoud Pezeshkian, executions have been increasingly used to stifle any sign of resistance or opposition. FOFI warned that these actions reflect the regime’s desperation to maintain control amid growing calls for freedom and justice from the Iranian people.

“The imminent executions of Ehsani and Hassani represent a horrifying escalation in the regime’s systematic repression,” FOFI stated. The advocacy group called on global human rights organizations, the European Union, and the United Nations to intervene swiftly, urging them to exert pressure on the Iranian government to halt the execution of political prisoners and to hold the regime accountable for its human rights abuses.

FOFI’s statement also pointed to the 1988 massacre, in which 30,000 political prisoners were executed, as an example of the Iranian government’s long-standing impunity. They called for the global community to take concrete steps, such as blacklisting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and implementing sanctions under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, to end the regime’s repressive practices.

The Only Path Forward:

To end this corrupt Regime. The unprecedented boycott of the Iranian regime’s elections and the rise of popular resistance prove that the people of Iran seek the end of this corrupt regime. Only by dismantling the theocratic rule of the mullahs can peace, security, and democracy be restored to Iran and the region. Mrs. Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan outlines the foundation for a democratic, secular republic in Iran—a vision that is increasingly embraced by the Iranian people and international politicians and human rights activists. We demand that the United Nations, the European Union, and all member states uphold their obligations to human rights and justice. The time to act is now. The global community must stand with the Iranian people in their fight for freedom, justice, and human dignity.

As global tensions rise and Iran’s human rights violations continue to draw attention, the Dutch Group of Friends of a Free Iran’s urgent call seeks to rally international action before it’s too late for Ehsani, Hassani, and countless other political prisoners.
