As Iran commemorates the second anniversary of the 2022 nationwide uprising, PMOI Resistance Units have marked the occasion with defiant actions and tributes to the martyrs of the movement.

These actions carried out despite the regime’s intensifying repression, underline the ongoing struggle for freedom in the country. The PMOI’s influence has grown significantly in recent years, and the Resistance Units, a network of activists, play a crucial role in shaping protests against the regime.

In Karaj, members of the Resistance Units displayed banners with the slogan, “Down with the oppressor, be it the Shah or the mullahs.” This slogan reflects the widespread rejection of all forms of dictatorship, which was a central theme of the 2022 uprising. Across several cities, the Resistance Units also honored the martyrs who lost their lives at the hands of the regime, holding up photos of those killed during the protests.

In Amol, a Resistance Unit member raised images of executed youth along with a message that read, “Like the Shah, the mullahs’ regime will be overthrown.” In Tehran, they held up images of martyrs Mohsen Shekari and Hamidreza Rouhi, paying tribute to their sacrifice. The phrase “Woman, Resistance, Freedom” was prominently displayed across various cities, emphasizing the leading role of women in the struggle for freedom and the fight against tyranny.

Posters of Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi were installed in several locations, alongside messages of defiance such as “Rebels never surrender” and “The democratic revolution of the people of Iran will be victorious.”

The death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in September 2022, after being brutally beaten by the regime’s “Guidance Patrol,” sparked protests that quickly grew into a nationwide movement. Amini’s death became a symbol of the fight against repression, with protests demanding the overthrow of the regime. The government responded with violence, resulting in the deaths of over 750 protesters and the arrest of thousands more.

Despite the crackdown, the PMOI and its Resistance Units have only grown stronger. The regime views them as an existential threat and has launched extensive misinformation campaigns to dissuade youth from joining the movement. However, the Resistance Units continue to expand, preparing for future uprisings and carrying on the legacy of the 2022 movement.
