At the Free Iran 2024 World Summit, former US National Security Advisor John Bolton called for the United States to adopt a definitive policy aimed at overthrowing the regime in Tehran.

Highlighting the ongoing suffering of the Iranian people under the current government, Bolton stressed the need for more decisive international action.“More must be done,” Bolton declared, emphasizing that foreign powers should not directly intervene but rather support Iranians in their quest for liberty. “This is a matter for Iranians. Others outside can do a lot to help, but this is for the benefit of the Iranian people,” he asserted.

Bolton clarified that the strategy involves enabling Iranians to defend themselves and push for change from within. “We’re not talking about overthrowing the government of Iran as our strategy. It’s the strategy of the people of Iran that we’re trying to help carry out,” he explained. Bolton called for material and financial support to bolster the Iranian opposition’s efforts.

A significant part of Bolton’s speech focused on the role of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). He praised the organization for its accurate and effective intelligence network within Iran, particularly regarding the country’s nuclear weapons program. “For over 20 years, I have followed very closely what they’ve said about Iran’s nuclear weapons program. They have never once released information publicly that wasn’t true in every material respect,” Bolton noted.

He emphasized that the NCRI’s extensive contacts provide a strong foundation to support the Iranian people’s efforts to achieve regime change. Bolton argued that the overthrow of the current regime is crucial not only for the Iranian people but for global security as well.

Bolton also pointed to broader geopolitical concerns, citing the emerging alliance between Beijing and Moscow, with Iran as a key participant. He highlighted Iran’s support for Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the potential for increased cooperation between Russia, China, and Iran, particularly in the realm of nuclear and ballistic missile technology. “The Beijing-Moscow axis…heightens the threat that Iran has, not just in the Middle East, but around the world,” he warned.

He called for rigorous enforcement of sanctions, criticizing current measures as insufficient. “Until sanctions are rigorously enforced…sanctions are a weapon of war without military force, in this case, used against the opposition,” Bolton argued. Concluding his remarks, Bolton emphasized the need for a clear, articulated policy from the US to support regime change in Iran. “There is no compromise with these ayatollahs, there is only their overthrow, that is the only answer,” he stated, calling for continued support for the Iranian opposition to pave the way for a democratic government in Iran.
