The Iranian Foreign Ministry has formally requested that Western nations halt the activities of the Iranian Resistance, particularly targeting the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
This call to action was highlighted during a press conference on May 14, where a correspondent, aligned with the regime’s official stance, posed a pointed question about the lobbying efforts of the PMOI/MEK in Europe and the United States.
Naser Kanaani, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, responded by denigrating the PMOI/MEK, a common tactic used by the regime to undermine the opposition group. He stated, “Should these countries heed the hypocrites’ counsel, it prompts serious doubts about their political acumen and foresight.” Kanaani criticized the ongoing sanctions against Iran, suggesting that these measures were unjust and ineffective. He called on sanctioning nations to reassess their policies, hinting that the persistence of such sanctions was driving the PMOI/MEK to seek further support from Western nations.
This press conference underscores the Iranian regime’s growing concern over the influence and activities of the PMOI/MEK, particularly their efforts to lobby for intensified sanctions and the activation of the snapback mechanism under UN Security Council Resolution 2231. The snapback mechanism would reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran, a move that Tehran vehemently opposes.
The PMOI/MEK, represented by Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, has been actively engaging with lawmakers and officials from various countries. Rajavi has called for several measures, including the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, the activation of the snapback mechanism, and the recognition of the Iranian people’s right to overthrow the clerical regime.
The regime’s apprehension is further illustrated by its recent demonization campaign against the Iranian Resistance, utilizing former affiliates and propagandistic narratives. A state-run website, Alef, managed by Ahmad Tavakoli, highlighted the PMOI/MEK’s deep-rooted influence within the opposition to the Islamic Republic. The article warned of a “dangerous future” if the regime fails to address the growing appeal of the PMOI/MEK, especially among the youth, who are reportedly being drawn to the group’s ideology through “attractive and diverse cultural packages.”
Alef’s article concluded with a stark warning: “These efforts, alongside destructive cultural activities aimed at influencing the minds of Iranian youth, should open the eyes of the cultural custodians of the country to many bitter truths. If we neglect, we will find ourselves surrounded by young people who, due to a lack of proper understanding of historical realities and because of economic and social rifts, will be drawn to the hidden discourse of the MEK, which has no parallel in crime.” The Iranian regime’s call for Western nations to curb the activities of the PMOI/MEK highlights the increasing influence and threat the resistance group poses to Tehran’s authority, as well as the ongoing geopolitical struggle between Iran and the West.
