As the war in Gaza enters its third month, the influence of Iran’s regime in perpetuating chaos in the Middle East has become increasingly evident. Politicians and analysts are united in recognizing Tehran’s critical role in this crisis.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has detailed Tehran’s stakes in their new report, highlighting the necessity of a firm policy towards Iran for peace in the region. The NCRI identifies two core strategies of the Iranian regime post-1979 revolution: internal suppression and global crisis dissemination under the guise of ‘revolution export.

Tehran’s meddling in regional conflicts, according to the NCRI, is primarily to distract from Iran’s internal crises and to suppress domestic protesters. This is evident in the numerous executions and repressive actions against dissidents and minorities in Iran since the war’s onset. Opinions diverge on how to approach Tehran’s provocations. Some advocate appeasement, hoping to avoid a US-Iran war and integrate Iran into peace solutions.

This dual strategy underpins the activities of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), which is charged with both quashing internal dissent and exporting terrorism.

The NCRI contends that this has only enabled Iran to exacerbate regional conflicts, pointing to its destructive roles in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Palestine. The Iranian regime’s narrative, propagated by its lobbies and media, falsely positions any opposition as warmongering. The NCRI report asserts that Iran’s use of proxy forces in other countries is a tactic to maintain power, hide internal issues, and prevent uprisings. Ignoring these interventions and appeasing the regime bolsters its strategic goals.

War is not the advocated solution. The NCRI supports a grassroots movement within Iran, pushing for democratic transformation and regime change. Since 2017, there have been significant nationwide uprisings in Iran expressing this desire. The organized resistance, symbolized by the PMOI and NCRI, is growing and confronting the regime’s suppression efforts.

The regime’s response includes discrediting opposition groups, spreading misinformation, and attacking resistance members and supporters. However, the NCRI stresses the importance of a unified national opposition to sustain protests and effect change.

In summary, the NCRI’s report emphasizes that peace in the Middle East hinges on a firm stance against the Iranian regime and supporting the Iranian people’s aspirations for freedom. Neither war nor appeasement is the answer; instead, it’s about empowering the Iranian resistance and acknowledging their struggle for a democratic Iran.
