Michèle Rivasi’s multifaceted career spanned decades of political, environmental, and social activism. Beginning with the establishment of the Commission for Independent Research and Information on Radioactivity in 1986 post-Chernobyl disaster, she steadily rose through the ranks of French politics. Representing Drôme’s 1st constituency in France’s National Assembly from 1997 to 2002, she initially worked as an independent ecologist before joining Europe Écologie–The Greens.
Her significant political journey included leading roles such as heading the Europe Écologie list in the South-East constituency for the 2009 European elections and serving in the European Parliament until 2023. Rivasi was instrumental in various committees, notably in health crisis coordination, and took an active role in the ACP–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. Her work extended beyond traditional political realms; in 2019, she was arrested for protesting U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe, highlighting her fearless approach to advocacy.
Michèle Rivasi’s untimely death on November 29, 2023, at age 70, due to a heart attack in Brussels, marks a significant loss.
