The event marked a critical stance against Iran’s oppression of its citizens and its role in fostering regional conflicts and supporting terrorism. Iranian opposition President-elect Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), was notably invited to address the gathering. Her presence underscored the growing concern in the international community about Iran’s internal and external policies.
Finnish Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Petri Sarvamaa delivered a compelling speech, highlighting the dichotomy between the Iranian regime and the Iranian Resistance. Sarvamaa stated, “The National Council of Resistance of Iran and Mrs. Rajavi rightly state that the Iran regime is not a friend of the people of Iran,” emphasizing the regime’s antagonism towards peace in the Middle East.
Sarvamaa elaborated on the ongoing conflicts in the region, attributing the Iranian regime’s actions as a significant obstacle to peace. He argued that for Iran, “Palestine is a business,” and peace in the region would undermine this ‘business model’. He accused the Iranian regime of sabotaging peace efforts, particularly since the Oslo Accords.

The MEP contrasted this with the NCRI’s stance, led by Mrs. Rajavi, who has consistently supported the Palestinian government and Mahmoud Abbas. Sarvamaa highlighted the NCRI’s immediate support for the Oslo peace agreement, demonstrating their commitment to regional stability.
Sarvamaa also criticized European governments for not designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a key arm of the Iranian regime, as a terrorist organization. He asserted, “Designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization is actually necessary for peace in the region and for fighting terrorism.”
The MEP concluded his speech with a hopeful note, expressing his wish to visit a free Iran and acknowledging the European Parliament’s role in advocating for this change. He reiterated the importance of supporting the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom, saying, “We hear them and will continue to support them until Iran is free.”

The conference at the European Parliament represents a significant moment in the ongoing discourse about Iran’s role in regional conflicts and its domestic human rights issues. The invitation extended to Mrs. Rajavi and the strong words of MEP Sarvamaa reflect a growing international resolve to address these challenges head-on.
