In a remarkable display of solidarity, 110 representatives from 47 European countries, as part of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, have voiced their support for the widespread uprising in Iran, echoing the Iranian people’s desire for freedom and democracy.

The European representatives also made a fervent appeal to the Albanian government to safeguard the fundamental rights of the Iranian opposition, particularly members of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI/MEK) who are currently residing in Ashraf 3.

The statement issued by this coalition of European nations reflects a profound concern for the situation in Iran. It acknowledges the courage of the Iranian youth, women, and girls who initiated nationwide protests in September 2022, demanding a transformation of their nation’s governance, an end to oppression, and the establishment of a democratic system.

The representatives openly condemn the violent suppression of these protests, which led to the tragic loss of over 750 lives, tens of thousands of arrests, and an alarming increase in executions. Beyond its borders, the Iranian regime’s use of disinformation, terrorism, and cyberattacks to silence dissidents is a matter of deep concern.

Of particular note is the Iranian regime’s aggressive behavior towards Albania and its 2,500 Iranian dissidents residing in Ashraf 3. This includes threats of cyberattacks and the spread of disinformation. The European representatives call for a united European stance against these actions.

Furthermore, they strongly urge Albania to uphold the fundamental rights of Ashraf residents, including freedom of expression and assembly, in line with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Albanian Prime Minister’s commitment to upholding the rights of Iranian refugees, as confirmed in 2016, must be honored.

The statement reinforces the belief that European nations must remain steadfast in upholding the values enshrined in international conventions and treaties, most notably the freedom of expression and assembly. It is a clear message that the European representatives stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their quest for freedom, democracy, and human rights.
