Two more Iranian women, Monireh Siadat, 32, and Farzieh Shokrollahi, met their untimely death by execution in the Central Prison of Isfahan, Dastgerd Prison, on Sunday, July 9, 2023. Both women were found guilty of deliberate murder.

Monireh Siadat, a dressmaker by profession and a victim of forced marriage, had been incarcerated for three years following the murder of her husband. Farzieh Shokrollahi was detained approximately five years ago on similar charges. The executions of these women have not been officially announced at the time this report was prepared.

These deaths contribute to an unsettling statistic: the total number of women executed in Iran since 2007 now stands at 215, according to records maintained by the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Tragically, the Iranian regime now holds the record for the highest number of female executions worldwide, as documented in the NCRI Women’s Committee’s “List of Women Executed in Iran since 2007.” No other government worldwide has such a high rate of female executions. The list does not include the tens of thousands of women executed on political grounds, which further exacerbates the issue.

The NCRI Women’s Committee has stated that a significant number of the women executed by the Iranian regime were victims of domestic violence who acted in self-defense.

The death penalty is widely used in Iran as a means of punishment, disproportionately targeting religious and ethnic minorities, political dissidents, and women. In 2019 alone, the regime hanged 16 women, with six of those executions taking place in December. Similarly, 18 women were executed in 2021, seven of whom were executed between November 22 and December 21.

Data compiled by the NCRI Women’s Committee also showed that in 2022, at least 15 women were executed in Iran, which indicates an average of 15 women are executed each year in the country. This grim reality underscores the oppressive and violent tactics that continue to target women under the current regime.
