In a bold move, 294 representatives of the French National Assembly, including a Vice President of the parliament, four parliamentary group leaders, three parliamentary committee heads, 15 committee deputies, and four former ministers, have endorsed a statement backing the Iranian people’s demand for a democratic republic where religion and state are separate.
The document, titled “Support the Iranian People in Their Struggle for a Secular and Democratic Republic,” highlights the difficult circumstances faced by Iranians, noting that around 750 protestors have been killed and 30,000 arrested amidst the ongoing resistance.
Reflecting the French MPs’ commitment to global democratic principles, the signatories declared their solidarity with the Iranian people’s desire for freedom. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran in their desire for a secular and democratic republic where no individual, regardless of religion or birthright, has any privilege over others,” the statement emphasized.
“Through their slogans, the Iranian people have made it clear that they reject all forms of dictatorship, be it the deposed Shah or the current theocratic regime, and thus reject any association with either,” the MPs asserted.
While the statement recognizes the Iranian people’s right to shape their own future, it appreciates the ongoing efforts of the democratic coalition of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The MPs expressed belief in NCRI President Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-point Plan, which calls for free elections, gender equality, freedom of expression, abolition of the death penalty, and a non-nuclear Iran, among other things.
The statement also condemned the Iranian regime’s disruptive interventions in the Middle East and Europe, including terrorist attempts and cyber-attacks. Furthermore, it urged the international community to support the Iranian people’s struggle and called for decisive actions against the Iranian regime, including blacklisting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and holding regime officials accountable for their crimes against humanity.
