In a shocking development, family and legal representatives of Zahra Jalilian, an exceptional doctoral student at the University of Tehran, allege that the university declared her death a suicide without any substantiated evidence.

The claim comes seven months after her suspicious demise, which is shrouded in uncertainty due to the lack of CCTV footage from 13 cameras in the building where the incident took place.

Jalilian, 32, hailed from Eslamabad-e Gharb and was a top-tier scholar in the doctoral program of electrical engineering at the University of Tehran, specializing in nanoelectronics. Notably, Jalilian had an exceptional academic record, including a GPA of 19.50 (out of 20) and successful defense of her doctoral thesis. The prodigious physicist also held an international reputation, having reviewed 30 international papers and having received invitations from several European countries, along with a prestigious scholarship from Germany.

The tragic incident took place on December 2, 2022, when Jalilian was rushed from her office to Shariati Hospital at 10:30 am, mere hours after entering her office at 8:30 am. She succumbed to her injuries later that day. Jalilian’s brother further claimed that the security personnel were absent from their posts, which were located in a room next to the building’s entrance, at the time of the incident.

Jalilian's family claim that university officials prematurely declared the cause of her death as suicide while she was still alive. This, they argue, was done without any substantial evidence

He added, “They announced without evidence that my sister threw herself from the ground floor to the basement. The forensic medical reports indicate a ruptured spleen. It is evident that Zahra was murdered. The only thing that remains unclear is the motive behind the murder and the person or persons responsible for it. Despite evidence of physical trauma on Zahra’s hands, the university has not launched an investigation.”

Zahra’s mother echoed these sentiments in a heartfelt letter, recounting her daughter’s extraordinary achievements, including her international breakthrough in solid-state physics. She also brought up troubling details regarding Zahra’s safety concerns, stating, “Two nights before the incident, Zahra had confided in us and one of her friends, saying, ‘I have made a discovery that would win the Nobel Prize in Physics. I fear that if someone finds out, they might forcibly take it from me or otherwise harm me.'”

The Jalilian family continues to demand justice and clarity over Zahra's tragic and untimely death. However, the truth remains obscured by the conspicuous absence of security footage and the university's unwillingness to investigate.
