Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has warned officials about the dire consequences of their internal conflicts, as the Iranian regime’s power struggles boil over.

Khamenei’s caution comes amid a mounting crisis that threatens the very survival and continuity of the regime, as it faces an existential crisis. The ongoing crisis is not merely a political or economic one, nor an internal predicament on the “fringes.” Instead, it is an existential crisis that threatens the survival and continuity of the regime. The current predicament is rooted in the regime’s entrenched corruption and mismanagement, particularly those of Khamenei himself.

In an attempt to cement his regime and counter looming uprisings, Khamenei initiated a process of “power consolidation.” This included eliminating rival faction candidates during the 2020 parliamentary elections and handpicking his preferred parliamentarians. In June 2021, Khamenei appointed Ebrahim Raisi as president despite his reprehensible human rights record.

Shortly thereafter, the Supreme Leader appointed Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, another notorious criminal, as the head of the judiciary.

Khamenei’s speech on the occasion of Eid-El-Fitr emphasized the need for cooperation among the leaders of the three branches of the regime. However, his message was tacitly directed towards the regime’s Majlis, which has been complaining about Raisi’s government’s socio-economic failure. Due to Raisi’s consistent failure, there have been growing calls for his impeachment.

The leaders of the three branches of the regime are at an impasse on fundamental issues afflicting the regime and how to address them effectively. The current predicament is not merely a political or economic crisis, but an existential crisis threatening the very survival and continuity of the regime. The countrywide uprising that erupted in September has exposed the regime’s vulnerability and resulted in Khamenei’s defeat. The regime’s mandate was to suppress a restive society, not to alleviate the country’s economic predicament. The mounting internal conflicts within the regime can be attributed to the ongoing large-scale protests and the likelihood of a downfall that has agitated the ruling theocracy.

As the regime continues to flounder, the Iranian people resolutely strive to topple it. The global community must endorse the Iranian people’s aspiration to create a secular and democratic republic. This can be achieved by acknowledging the people’s right to self-defense and intensifying pressure on the regime by designating its Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist entity and refraining from negotiating with the failing ruling theocracy.
