Ms. Parvaneh, a political prisoner, was serving the fourth year of her sentence when she was released from Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad on February 15, 2023. She was arrested on March 7, 2023, and released after four days. According to reports on social media, the IRGC confiscated all of Sakineh Parvaneh’s registration documents about four years ago. Despite her release from prison, her documents were not returned to her, which has made it difficult for her to find housing, employment, and basic services such as purchasing a mobile phone SIM card.
Sakineh Parvaneh was born in 1988 and has a history of being arrested and tortured for her political activities. She was detained in 2019 for visiting her family in the Kurdistan region of Iraq and underwent harsh interrogations under psychological and physical torture in various detention centers and prisons, including Evin Prison in Tehran. Ms. Parvaneh has also gone on several hunger strikes to protest her sentence and the conditions of her imprisonment. In August 2020, she was sentenced to an additional two years for “rioting in prison.”
Human rights organizations have expressed concern about the treatment of political prisoners in Iran, including the use of torture and the denial of basic human rights. The re-arrest of Sakineh Parvaneh highlights the ongoing issues faced by political prisoners in Iran and the need for increased international attention and pressure on the Iranian government to respect the rights of all its citizens.
The Iranian government has been criticized by the international community for its treatment of political prisoners, especially those from minority groups like the Kurds. Ms. Parvaneh’s case is just one example of the ongoing repression faced by Kurdish citizens in Iran.
The re-arrest of Sakineh Parvaneh is a reminder that political repression and human rights abuses continue to be a serious problem in Iran. It is crucial that the Iranian government takes steps to address these issues and works to create a more just and equitable society for all its citizens.
