While dozens of other repressive agencies and institutions operate in Iran, their core duties and responsibilities are nothing more than cracking down on the people, especially women and youth, the Iranian regime’s Red Crescent is being enlisted to preserve “chastity and hijab.”
The ‘Helal Ahmar’ (Arabic for Red Crescent) Organization of the Iranian regime has been officially added to the regime’s massive repressive apparatus. State-run media reported the establishment of a group called “spreading the culture of chastity and hijab” in this so-called relief organization, which was supposed to be a non-governmental organization (NGO) and a member of the International Red Cross Movement that saves people’s lives and cares for safety.
The ‘Helal Ahmar’ must assist in rescuing and evacuating the injured and victims of crises such as floods, earthquakes, wars, and other natural disasters in accordance with its international responsibilities (as defined by the International Committee of the Red Cross).
“The Red Crescent Society works with sensitivity and its own interest in chastity and Islamic hijab,” the Secretary-General of the Red Crescent Society Yaghoub Soleimani said in a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Interior, according to the state-run ISNA news agency. To implement large-scale projects in this area, we need credit in addition to coordination.”
The foundation of a group called “Spreading the Culture of Chastity and Hijab” in the regime’s Red Crescent Youth Organization was confirmed by Mohammad Golfshan, the regime’s Red Crescent Youth Organization’s head. According to Golfshan, a national group’s work has already begun, and the procedure has been shared with the entire Red Crescent Society.

Meanwhile, the state-run Eqtesad News questioned the decision, writing on April 13: “Isn’t this move against the Director-guidelines General’s and a violation of the Red Crescent Society’s management?” Violators who take arbitrary actions – however valuable, spiritual, and admirable they may be – are breaking the dictum of this charitable relief organization and changing and amending the organization’s statute. Which judicial authority is responsible to address this obvious breach?”
