Iran: International Community Condemns IRGC Missile Attack on Iraqi Kurdish Targets
The Iranian regime’s Revolutionary Guards Corps has assumed responsibility for the Sunday morning missile assaults on Erbil, northern Iraq, which have sparked significant international condemnation. The attack was also dubbed a “terrorist act” by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masroor Barzani, Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani, Mustafa Kazemi, Mohammad al-Halbousi, and Barham Saleh, the commanders of Iraq’s three forces.
Elements of the Iranian regime” have claimed responsibility for the attack and must be held accountable for “this blatant violation of Iraqi sovereignty and for terrorist attacks on the property of innocent civilians,” Matthew Toller said in a statement on Sunday.
On Sunday, March 14, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan made a statement in which he stated that the US “strongly condemns” Iran’s recent missile attack on Iraq’s Kurdistan area. The attack on a civilian residential area in Erbil, according to the US National Security Adviser, was “unjustified.”
As per Sullivan, the US, together with Iraqi and regional officials, condemns the attack on Iraqi national sovereignty and the Kurdistan Region and supports the Iraqi government’s efforts to hold Iran accountable, as well as its regional partners’ efforts to resist similar Iranian threats. Jake Sullivan of CBS News said, “The United States has long made it clear that it will do whatever it takes to defend its people and its interests.”
A missile assault on Erbil, as per France, would jeopardize attempts to finalize ongoing nuclear discussions on resurrecting the JCPOA. The spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of concluding talks to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal, saying the attacks posed a threat to Iraq’s and the region’s stability. The “terrorist missile attack” on Erbil was also condemned by the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council. He voiced his support for the Iraqi people in their fight against terrorism and for improving the country’s security and stability, opposing all forms of terrorism and extremism.
Egypt also criticized the missile attack on Erbil by the Revolutionary Guards. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing its solidarity with Iraq and pledging assistance for all Iraqi efforts to maintain the country’s security and stability.
The German government condemned the Revolutionary Guards’ missile attacks on Erbil in a statement released on Sunday. The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Berlin will continue to support Iraqi sovereignty, unity, and stability, as well as the war against ISIS. Attacks against diplomatic workers, envoys, and installations belonging to the global coalition fighting ISIS were “unacceptable,” according to the ministry, which added that culprits must be held accountable.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry also condemned the missile attack on Erbil in a statement. “Such attacks, which target peace and stability in Iraq, are completely unacceptable,” the statement said. Elsewhere in the statement, Turkey stressed it will continue to stand with the Iraqi people in the “war against terror.”
Iran’s missile strikes on Erbil prompted US Republican Senator Marco Rubio to tweet that Tehran’s action is aimed at hastening the US military and diplomatic withdrawal from Iraq.
Republican Senator Jim Risch slammed US President Biden’s response to the Revolutionary Guards missile attack on Erbil in an interview with Fox News, saying, “The Islamic Republic appears to have done what it wanted because it attacked the US facility in Iraq, and now the US Deputy Secretary of State Sherman says we need to sign an agreement with Iran as soon as possible.”
In this program, we intend to show how the world’s largest terrorist organization is funded. The IRGC controls Iran’s economy through 14 powerhouses. These powerhouses fund the IRGC’s activities and its subsidiaries, such as the terrorist Quds Force and Basij militia.
