Maryam Rajavi praised the martyrs and true leaders of Iran’s anti-monarchical revolution of 1979, saying that the Iranian people’s fight against the current religious regime is a continuation and evolution of the 1979 revolution.

On Wednesday, February 9, the annual session of the “Friends of a Free Iran” parliamentary groups began, with members of the European Parliament and MPs from 19 countries in attendance. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the Iranian opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI),, was the keynote speaker at the event with participants from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Romania, Malt, Lithuania, Slovenia, Poland, and San Marino. A delegation from Australia also attended.

“As a friend of Free Iran, we express our support for the Iranian people’s struggle and Resistance to overturn clerical tyranny and construct a democratic and pluralistic republic that would serve peace and stability,” Antonio Stango, President of the Italian Federation for Human Rights, said. The majority of the challenges confronting Iran’s society today have grown severe, and the regime has reached a point of no return, resulting in workers, farmers, teachers, and other sectors of society rising in opposition. Iran has seen multiple state-wide protests since late 2017, which have continued to this day. Mrs. Rajavi noted that, despite the regime’s claims, the mullahs have no support among society’s lowest classes. In such conditions, Khamenei appointed Ebrahim Raisi, the “Butcher of the 1988 Massacre,” as president of the mullahs.

Without the Iranian Resistance, the mullahs’ administration would have achieved complete control of the region by exporting Islamic fundamentalism. The MEK, as well as the Iranian Resistance as a whole, is viewed as an existential threat by the Iranian regime. As a result, combating the Iranian Resistance is a top priority for the regime’s domestic and foreign policies. Mrs. Rajavi went on to say that the main portion of the mullahs’ security, propaganda, and psychological warfare resources are allocated to confront the Iranian Resistance.

During the conference, several FOFI members made comments, urging European governments and parliaments to acknowledge the 1988 massacre in Iran as “genocide and crime against humanity.”During the summer and early fall of 1988, about 30,000 political prisoners, largely MEK members, and supporters were executed across Iran in just a few months. Former Irish Prime Minister John Perry has attacked governments across Europe for their appeasement of Iran’s mullahs’ regime.” The European government’s unconscionable silence has allowed the Iranian regime to continue its horrible domestic crimes, foreign terrorism, and nuclear ambitions with perfect impunity to date,” he said. “We surely believe we must call on the European National governments,” he added.

“We should lend our support to and can cooperate with the NCRI as a viable democratic alternative to the regime which has the capability to establish a democratic, pluralistic and non-nuclear republic,” Mr. Perry concluded.

“The appeasement approach is futile and a failure,” stated Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a former European Parliament Vice President. “It’s counterproductive. It’s feeding our worst enemy… Let’s work altogether, restless, strongly, willingly to make Western governments and also the European Union, the External Action Service, the Council, and the Commission, of course, change their policy in relation to Iran, and replace this useless policy of appeasement and dialogue with a firm strong policy that will lead to regime change in Iran,” he added.

“A realistic assessment of the Iranian situation shows that the answer lies in the overthrow of the religious dictatorship. We are members of the committees which support the democratic resistance, for which reason are the target of attacks by the Iranian regime,” stated Leo Dautzenberg, the head of FOFI – Germany and a former member of the Bundestag
