Thousands of People’s Mojahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) members gathered in Ashraf 3, Albania, on Sunday for a memorial to Sir David Amess, a British MP and great friend of the Iranian people, who was murdered while conducting a meeting with his constituency in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Condolences to Sir David’s family and relatives

During the ceremony, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), spoke and extended her condolences to Sir David’s family and relatives.

“We have not gathered here simply to mourn Sir David’s death,” Mrs. Rajavi stated. “We’re also here to pay tribute to his life and achievements.” I am confident that he has now joined the ranks of all those who have given their lives in the service of human rights, democracy, and justice, which he was a staunch supporter.”

The Anglo-Iranian community

On the eve of his assassination, Sir David wrote an article for Townhall highlighting the Iranian regime’s role in the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran and supporting the call by the Anglo-Iranian community to detain him if he attended the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November.

“One of the proudest things I have ever done in my political career is to support the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which calls for the Iranian regime to be replaced with a safer and more democratic government,” Sir David said on September 6.

Key role in numerous of the Iranian Resistance

Sir David played a key role in numerous of the Iranian Resistance’s achievements. He and 34 of his parliamentary colleagues successfully challenged the UK government’s politically motivated prescription of the MEK in order to satisfy Iranian authorities in 2007.

He also worked relentlessly in Iraq to ensure the safety and security of MEK members in the Ashraf and Liberty camps. He was also instrumental in the safe transportation of MEK members from Iraq to Albania and other European nations.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in his commemoration speech in Parliament that he was a “seasoned campaigner of zest and grit” who sought “freedom for the people of Iran.”

In actuality, as Mrs. Maryam Rajavi expressed it, Sir David has fought a valiant war for the previous three decades in defense of the Iranian people’s crushed rights and in support of the main Iranian opposition.
