The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), reported that the republicans and Democrats found common ground last weekend in a rare display of bipartisanship, as an unexpected coalition of lawmakers joined calls from Iranian exiles for a democratic Iran and the overthrow of the regime.
The “Free Iran World Summit.”
The “Free Iran World Summit.” brought together Republican Senators Ted Cruz, Kevin McCarthy, Rick Scott, and Thom Tillis, as well as Democratic Senators Cory Booker, Bob Menendez, and Maggie Hassan.
On the occasion, former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-New York, also spoke.
Calling for a democratic and secular Iran
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) organized the conference, which is a body representing the resistance units opposing the Iranian regime and calling for a democratic and secular Iran.
Hardliner Ebrahim Raisi won the country’s presidential election despite widespread boycotts and reports of the elections being manipulated. Many others brought up Raisi’s allegations of human rights violations, for which he has been sanctioned by the US.
Denouncing a dictatorship as a new president
McCarthy joined others in denouncing a dictatorship and a new president who “has a history of suppressing freedom of speech, supporting terrorism and seeking nuclear weapons.” according to McCarthy.
“The Iranian government brutalizes its citizens and exports terrorism throughout the world and so I commend you on your courage, your strength, and on your leadership in helping to bring about a free, secular, and non-nuclear Iran and to give Iranians the types of freedoms and liberties they deserve.” chair of the House Democratic caucus, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries added.
Hundreds of Iranian activists from inside Iran
Hundreds of Iranian activists appeared from within Iran at iconic monuments, with their faces blurred, to highlight the country’s continuous resistance.
Booker acknowledged the American contributions to Iran and praised Iranians who participated in protests and social movements against “the authoritarian Iranian regime”.
“Their desire for democracy and justice outweighed their fear of being injured or taken to prison,” he said, adding that he was certain that the world will one day see an Iran that was “free and open”.
It was “a beacon of hope,” according to Menendez
It was “a beacon of hope,” according to Menendez, that “one day the people of Iran, the United States, and the rest of the world will rejoice in an Iranian government at peace with the international community and working to secure a better future for its people.”
Cruz, on the other hand, took a different tack, criticizing the Obama administration for entering the “catastrophic” Iran nuclear deal and other actions. He welcomed Trump’s maximum pressure campaign and accused Biden’s new government of appeasing an “evil and despotic regime.”
“We’re now heading into a dangerous chapter, with the Biden-Harris administration,” he remarked. “They worked to undermine the national security gains made in the last four years and reinvigorate the ayatollahs.”
In Vienna, talks are continuing to bring the US and Iran back to the 2015 nuclear deal. After the Trump administration withdrew in 2018, the Biden administration expressed interest in re-joining. However, Raisi publicly confirmed that he will not meet with Vice President Biden until sanctions are lifted.
