(NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran): Iranian Regime’s Attempts to Fix Economy will Only Make it Worse.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), reported that the Iranian economy is in a terrible state right now and this is down to the regime, even according to government experts whose assessments are usually more optimistic than realistic.
Effectiveness
Last May, the Economic Affairs Research Institute advised that “Iran is not in a good position in terms of governance” after reviewing statistics from multiple institutions. For instance, Iran was rated 131st out of 209 countries for “government effectiveness”, but in most other areas, it was in the bottom 50 countries of the world and the bottom 10 in the Middle East.
Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, the Minister of Information and Communications Technology said during the final days of his tenure that “thousands of faces of the pain of poverty and deprivation parade before our eyes” every day and it’s impossible to see the true pain of survival.
He said: “The government is deeply interfering in the market and thinks that the economy of a is a young child that will follow the government’s orders.”
Then, he admitted that the regime was not performing well with regards to “effective governance”, which is strange because that’s the only area that the Economic Affairs Institute deemed acceptable.
(NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran): Since March 2020, the coronavirus has paralyzed much of the country’s economy.
Inflation
Iran is also suffering from chronic inflation, which the Tejarat daily described last week as “the most important challenge” and said showed the “inefficiencies and structural problems” in Iran’s economy
The paper wrote: “The result of all these inefficiencies in the economy will be an increase in inflation, because eventually, the government will have to solve these problems indirectly, without the people realizing it, by money printing.”

Mismanagement
Expediency Discernment Council member Kourosh Sharafshahi said that Iran’s economy is in “turmoil”, with the main problem being mismanagement and misgovernance, citing several examples to back up his claim, including:
- tax evasion by high-income groups
- reduced production
- increased brokerage businesses
- padding the budget with oil sales and the printing of money
- increased economic divide
- a sevenfold increased liquidity problem
- unsuccessful privatizations of companies
He said: “The prices have become so high that minimum wage earners are fed up, and the increase in salaries and wages cannot meet these costs, which result in empty tables and breadwinners who are ashamed before their family. A fat and lazy government-run country… The same approach causes a lot of costs in the form of salaries and wages to be imposed on the country’s economy, in such a way that a large part of government revenue is spent on government salaries and benefits.”

Lies
Iranian officials have been trying to lower the exchange rate by increasing pressure on the financial markets to bring the dollar rate below 200,000 rials, which is also why they are throwing so much effort into nuclear deal negotiations and other short-term relief efforts ahead of the presidential elections, but this will only backfire.
