The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), reported that the Iranian regime has lobbies all over the world. This is not concerning in itself except for the fact that Western media outlets – and as a result, the general public – are being deceived. There are countless examples of how lobbyists have influenced public opinion as well as high-level government officials and policymakers.

One such example is Seyed Hossein Mousavian who went to the United States as a “visiting scholar” in 2009 after supposedly breaking ties with the Iranian regime. However, if we look at the work he has done and what he publicly advocates for, it is more than clear that he is there to promote pro-regime talking points.

He was the Iranian ambassador to Germany from 1992 to 1997. In actual fact, he was working in the interests of the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). At the beginning of his time as ambassador, the MOIS killed four Kurd opposition activists in Mykonos restaurant in Berlin. Even though several of the assassins were tried, Mousavian described the proceedings as ridiculous.

German authorities actually declared that high-level officials were involved in the plot, including the Foreign Minister and the Supreme Leader. Several Iranian diplomats were expelled from the embassy as a result.

The plot in the nineties to disrupt a massive opposition rally

Another incident that happened while Mousavian was ambassador was the plot in the nineties to disrupt a massive opposition rally. There were concerns that Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), was going to be assassinated and she was suddenly banned from entering the country because of the threat to her life.

Only a few days ago Mousavian said that the US and Iran need to “reopen the door of trust” and for the US to return to the nuclear deal. What he is really saying is that the US needs to lift economic sanctions on Iran. This is exactly what the regime wants and something that would be a major mistake for the United States to do.

It is clear that Western media outlets have a responsibility to fact check and report responsibly especially when it comes to individuals that are advocating for interests that the regime has.

Mousavian has often collaborated with Trita Parsi

Mousavian has often collaborated with Trita Parsi, another regime lobbyist. Many suspicions have been voiced about Parsi and the work that he does, yet he continues to push and promote pro-regime ideas. This should ring alarm bells but oddly they are slipping through the net.

Another indication that someone is working for the Iranian regime’s disinformation campaign is when the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) is openly criticized. The main opposition to the Iranian regime has been targeted by the regime and its lobbies for decades, but it is starting to gain recognition among the international community as the only viable alternative to the Iranian regime. It is praised by many for its work towards freedom and democracy in Iran and is considered by the regime to be one of the main threats to its survival.
