The Iranian regime’s parliament took drastic action last month to get international sanctions lifted. The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran) and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), analysis says mullah regime decided to resort to nuclear blackmail.
Nuclear extortion
The Iranian regime has never fully upheld its obligations as per the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or the 2015 Iran nuclear deal as it is known, but it decided in December to take it to the next level.
At the beginning of this month, the nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), issued a statement explaining that it had been informed by Tehran that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran plans to produce enriched uranium up to levels of 20 percent at one of its nuclear sites.
This is a major violation of the nuclear agreement, and the European signatories to it admitted that it was a “considerable departure”.
Iranian regime maintained its nuclear program
For many years, the main opposition to the Iranian regime – the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran)– has warned the international community about the Iranian regime’s continued progress of its nuclear program despite the JCPOA. It has said on many occasions that the Iranian regime has never fully halted its quest to be nuclear-armed.
Despite evidence to the contrary, the Iranian regime has always maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. The NCRI drew attention to the regime’s Lavizan-Shian nuclear facility located near the country’s capital city but the regime subsequently destroyed all evidence at the site before inspectors could investigate.
Iranian regime intentions are to obtain a nuclear bomb
In any case, this is irrelevant now because it is very clear through the regime’s latest actions that its intentions have been to obtain a nuclear bomb all along.
For this reason, it is imperative that the international community takes swift action to put a halt to Iran’s progress. The Iranian regime is in a desperate situation with increased domestic pressure and mounting international isolation.
It is doing all it can to get back to the times of appeasement – the so-called “golden years” when the regime did as it pleased knowing that it would never face the consequences.
The Iranian regime is on the verge of collapse
Yet, times have changed. The golden years it experienced only a few years ago are gone. The regime’s desperation after the major nationwide protests of 2018 and 2019 is obvious, as are the people of Iran’s desire to see the regime collapse.
It is very important that the international community does not fall into the trap of turning a blind eye to the regime’s extortion. The European Union and the rest of the international community need to impose six United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding the Iranian regime’s nuclear activity and they should also oblige the regime to immediately put an end to its malign nuclear endeavors.
Failing this, the EU and the international community would be giving the regime the upper hand. They would effectively be giving the Iranian regime the green light to continue extorting the international community, to continue suppressing the people of Iran, to continue running rampant across the Middle East and beyond, and so on.
