EU Should Sanction Iran

(NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran): On December 12, Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam was executed by the Iranian regime for publishing a new site that was critical of the regime.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), reported that the plainclothes agents of the Iranian regime have destroyed national wrestling champion Navid Afkari’s tombstone, which the resistance has called a “blatant” sign that the regime will continue its human rights abuses.

Afkari was executed in September, despite an international campaign to save his life, for taking part in the 2018 uprising.

The regime’s disgusting actions come just a week after they executed Ruhollah Zam, an Iranian journalist given refugee status in France, which was roundly condemned by Western politicians, especially those in Europe.

However, these countries also failed to take a firm policy against the regime. The European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell was actually set to give a joint keynote address with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at a business forum on December 12 before he hastily pulled out when news of the execution broke.

But this conference has not been canceled; instead, it was just postponed, with promises that soon European and Iranian policymakers could engage in dialogue for effective economic diplomacy.

Now it is time for the European Union to act in favor of human

(NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran): Now it is time for the European Union to act in favor of human rights.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani felt safe saying that Zam’s execution wouldn’t impact on the regime’s relations with Europe, while the Foreign Ministry felt they could “summon” ambassadors of several European countries to condemn them for opposing Zam’s execution.

All of this is happening against the backdrop of Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi being tried in Europe on terrorism charges for attempting to blow up a 2018 Free Iran rally by the National Council of Resistance of Iran’s (NCRI), and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran),  in Paris and the EU’s adoption of a global human rights sanctions regime that targets those involved in “serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide, no matter where they occurred”.

Report from Times UK

(NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran): Trial of Iranian Diplomat on Terror Charges.

Borrell said of the sanctions regime: “When serious human rights violations happen, the EU must go beyond adopting resolutions and making statements – we must be able to act… [because human rights are] in the DNA of the European Union.”

But does this include Iran? Because all the evidence so far says no.

Borrell and the rest of the EU should abandon talks with Iran in favor of a firm policy that will hold the regime accountable for their terrorism, warmongering, and human rights abuses. It’s too late to save Zam or Afkari or any of the 120,000 people killed for their politics there for the past 40 years, but we still have time to save the next activist on death row.

The Iranian Resistance, (NCRI) and (PMOI / MEK Iran) wrote: “[The EU] should sanction the regime, its chief apologist Zarif and hold the regime to account for its past and present crimes. This action indeed will be a decisive step toward restoring the EU’s dignity, which got lost when they ignored human rights violations in Iran.”
