(PMOI / MEK Iran): Lawmakers on Capitol Hill introduced the first formal piece of legislation expressing explicit support for Iran Protests.

The Iranian regime has been watching closely over the developments of the recent US Presidential election. While the ruling mullahs’ may wish to appear as though the outcome of the election was of no consequence to Iranian policymaking, the regime has long relied on the appeasement of the international community, especially the US, to continue their theocratic rule. The future of how the US administration will handle the human rights atrocities and crimes against humanity committed by Iran is unclear. The next administration would be wise to be wary of pro-regime lobbyists and media that spread disinformation about Iran and its opposition, NCRI and (PMOI / MEK Iran). Most of these groups use the same talking points when describing the MEK and Iranian Resistance, so they are easy to identify.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, addressed the US elections on Twitter, attempting to convey an air of indifference as to the election outcome: “Regardless of the outcome, one thing is absolutely clear, the definite political, civil, and moral decline of the U.S. regime.”

President of the regime, Hassan Rouhani, undermined his supposed argument that Iran is unaffected by the US election outcome. He expressed his desires for the US administration to bow to the regime’s pressure for appeasement and negotiation: “We hope those who sanctioned have grasped that their path was wrong, and mistake and they will not obtain their goals. We hope that the three-year experience would be a lesson to them that will make the next U.S. administration to succumb to the law and regulation, and return to all its commitments.”

However, it is in fact the mullah’s who have not honored their commitments. A recent example is how the regime breached the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). They ignored the restrictions in the terms of the deal, which prohibited Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and resumed their nuclear program, opening new nuclear manufacturing facilities.

In an interview on 22 January with the state televisions Channel Four, the Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali-Akbar Salehi, disclosed that the government deceived foreign nuclear negotiators and watchdog over the Arak Nuclear Plant, Arak Heavy Water Reactor Facility.

In Rouhani’s 2011 book, titled National Security and Nuclear Diplomacy, Rouhani revealed that the regime was benefiting from nuclear negotiations and aimed to continue until a point of no return is reached in its nuclear development. He wrote: “While we were talking with the Europeans in Tehran, we were installing equipment in parts of the facility in Isfahan. In fact, by creating a calm environment, we were able to complete the work in Isfahan.”

The regime has repeatedly shown that international negotiations are fruitless. Iranian officials are unashamed about their deceitful behavior and will disregard the terms of any deal in order to achieve their ultimate goal of power. A firm and united approach must be taken by the international community to directly stop the regime from being able to continue in their criminal pursuits.

In this sense, there is truth to the idea that the US election outcome is of no great consequence to the strategy of the regime. Under the theocratic rule of the ayatollahs’, the regime will continue to deceive and undermine any negotiations in order to develop nuclear weapons. Regardless of whether the Republicans or Democrats hold power in the US, Tehran will seek to hold global power, destabilizing the Middle East and threatening the world with terrorism.

It is crucial that the international community puts great pressure on the Iranian regime and doesn’t allow them to continue enacting crimes against humanity. Iranian society is rising up against the oppressive rule of the regime, with the largest uprisings in years taking place across the country in 2018 and 2019. Governments across the globe must join in support of the people of Iran and their resistance movement lead by the National Council of Resistance of Iran’s (NCRI), and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK Iran), in their struggle for human rights and their democratic freedom. It is with the people of Iran that the power lies to overthrow the regime and create a democratic and legitimate system of government.

International pressure against Iran regime

The resolution highlighted the regime’s treatment of dissidents and opponents and details several terror plots in which the regime targeted the NCRI and the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (PMOI / MEK Iran).

MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS REGARDING MEDIA AND DISINFORMATION

The Iranian regime is skilled at using propaganda and disinformation for its own interests, and it has been caught interfering with American politics on social media on more than one occasion. The next administration would be wise to be wary of pro-regime lobbyists and media that spread disinformation about Iran and its opposition, NCRI and (PMOI / MEK Iran). Most of these groups use the same talking points when describing the MEK and Iranian Resistance, so they are easy to identify.
